Surgery 1-30

Hi- I just found the website and registered. I'm scheduled for first for a d/c -have found a uterine fibroid. Periods have been getting sporadic, spotting intermittently for the last 5-6 years. Doctor (female thank heavens) will test tissue but will go forward with a vaginal hyster. at the time of the d/c - in all probabitlity. I'm so over the mess, the probelms, the issues. She doesn't advise blood donations to self-nor does hospital staff as she is said to be meticulous- and not one woman has needed it. But, I think the hardest thing for me is the darned anesthesia- doing a general- I'm so sensitive to everything, caffeine, alcohol, novocaine, epinephrine- we stopped giving me this in tandem with novocaine when I have my teeth worked on because it's so bad. So.. anyone out there know a lot about the types of anesthesia that I should ask for- I don't have allergies- just am senstive. I had my tubes tied 20 years ago- and I had a miserable time waking up- I swear I had an out of body expereince- I'm getting the medical records sent to help me with this.

Good news I can eat a light preop meal at 4 am since surgery not until 1 pm- so that's helpful. Any hints about what to expect after surgery- doc is saying with vag hyst- two weeks- I'll learn more at the preop on 1/24. I've pulled the questions to ask- anything else I should do? CIK

Hi!

About the anesthesia.... many women are sensitive to generals. I personally dislike them for a lot of reasons. I had a spinal anesthesia with my vaginal hyst. It is a small prick to the lower back, to numb your abdominal areas, then a sedative is administered through your i.v. Depending on the amount and type of sedative, you can either be mildly aware or completely out during surgery. I opted for being 'out' and had no side effects coming out of the drugs. I believe the drawback to this type is the length of time that it can be used. So, if your surgery is scheduled beyond a couple of hours, it probably is not an option. There is also an epidural which is similar to the spinal. Unfortunately, I do not have experience with this to tell you more. You could do a search (purple button at the top of the page on 'epidural') Do some more searching and please talk to your doctor about options that may be available. Good Luck!

Welcome Sweety!

I agree ask the doctor and the anthesiologist. I have acute asthma and my anthes. discussed this with me and about my fears I had a general and had a little trouble waking but didn't know it until afterwards, but my anthes. stayed by my side like she told me she would and I was fine. I had oxygen for a couple days but even that was gone in no time. I am very senitive to meds also and they know about that so they treat me accordingly. My pharmacy even knows and warns me if something isn't right. I just live with it take the meds if they don't do right then I try something else. My asthma has been the worse. I am on singular and it has helped lots, and believe it or not my surgery helped quite a bit. I am not near as asthmaic as I was before. I still keep my inhaler near by but don't even think about it anymore. God Bless and just keep asking those questions. and for comfort.
