Red face - Prolapse after Hysterectomy Prolapse after Hysterectomy

I had a hysterectomy about 9 years ago, at that time I also had bladder and bowel prolapse repair, I have now been told by my GP that I have multiple prolapses again. I feel like I am carrying around a brick and I am constipated. I have heard a pessary may help, will this fix my problems or is surgery a better option.

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

maurz--

It's hard to tell whether a pessary will help you or not until you've actually tried one. Some people are really helped by one and others not.

If it were me and my doctor had recommended it, I would try it before surgery for sure. There are several different types so be sure you know that so you don't give up if you really want to try this method.

Hope all goes well for you.......

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

Wondering what your estrogen level is like. I have been told by my dr (now am facing my 2nd prolapse surgery after 11 years) that if your estrogen gets low, you are much more likely to have pelvic floor collapse. Also after the surgery, you have to maintain a certain level of vaginal estrogen for things to last.

My estrogen ran very low (undetected) for years after my hyst/bladder repair/enterocele repair (as my ovaries shut down prematurely) and that combined with lifting too heavy items probably caused my bladder repair to fail, and rectocele to worsen.

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

Hi Maurz,

I had the same problem. Hysterectomy 16 years ago. Cystocele and rectocele problems again. Primary causes for me were: one vaginal childbirth, heredity, hysterectomy, menopause, lifting, weight gain. I am not a candidate for hormone therapy due to blood clotting disorder. I could have put up with the urinary incontinence, but when I started with the rectocele problems again, worse than before, that was the last straw.

Just had surgery on Thursday, 1/28/10, and doing very well. Dr. Timothy McKinney put in a new bladder sling, and repaired the cystocele and rectocele. He was able to repair everything without laparoscopy. All stitches are internal, through vagina. Not in a lot of pain, and no gas from abdominal surgery! I will be much more careful about lifting this time, and will take plenty of time off work to make sure my insides are completely healed.

Good luck. It took me lots of tests and frustration to get to this point, but I think it will be worth it.

I have no idea as to my estrogen levels to be honest. I just want the problem to be fixed asap.

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

How long did it take for testing, what kind of testing did you have done. did you have a long hospital stay, and how long did it take you to get back to work. So many questions. I see the specialist on 23rd Feb, I would just like this problem fixed, I really am over it all. Thanks for your information, it is very helpfull

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

You can get blood drawn to test your hormone levels. Estrogen levels usually take a day to get results (locally), testosterone might take longer, progesterone is fast too I think.

Re: Prolapse after Hysterectomy

Seen Uro, have to have bladder tests on Tuesday, see the Uro straight after, he told me that more than likely I will be having surgery, I will know definatly Tuesday afternoon. Also having Cystoscopy at the same time. Any one know as to how long the hospital stay would be, if I have surgery.
