Advice Needed!! 4-week post hysterectomy and frustrated with pain
I had my TVH (kept ovaries) on 8/29 and at almost 4 week post op I am completely confused about how I should be feeling. My lower back hurts so bad and I am having lower right pelvic pain that spreads into my groin and down my thighs. I ran out of Percoset about 4 days ago but I didn't call and ask my Dr. for a refill. Now, it hurts more now than the first week. I tried taking 800mg Motin with 2-8hr Tylenol (625mg each) and it really didn't help at all. I am constantly having ice packs or heating pads with no relief. Its making me grouchy to say the least!! My belly still swells and becomes painful especially in afternoon. and I could go on...But my point.
At my pre-op my Dr. told me that I would be allowed to drive after 2 weeks and recovered after 4 weeks. But after reading the posts, I can see that I was not prepared for what to expect after surgery.
**At my 2- week post op, I explained to him about the groin pain, bladder spasms, lower back pain, difficulty urinating, how swollen and bulging my urethra was...and all I got was, "well, the surgery went well." I asked him if the swelly belly was normal he said "no" but offered no explanation and didn't offer to refill my pain meds. All he said was to increase my activity. I mean trying to 30 Percosets for 3 weeks is ridiculous! But here's the kicker, he wouldn't sign off on me driving. He said wait till after my 4 week post op visit. (mixed signals!!)
**Well, tomorrow is my 4 week post op appt and I am miserable. I still have all the same problems as I did at my 2-week appt except my main complaint is my lower back and groin pains. The pains shoot down my legs and nothing seems to help relieve the symptoms. I feel so intimidated by my Dr. I really need something to help relieve this pain, I just don't know how to ask. He just acts like I should be healed already! I don't even know how I'm suppose to feel. I just want to cry. He makes me regret ever getting it done (not that I had much choice-cervical cancer and adenomyois/heavy bleeding)
I am so confused. Can someone help???? I really need some advice on how to approach my appointment tomorrow.

Re: Advice Needed!! 4-week post op and frustrated with pain
I hate to say this, but I would seriously consider seeing another Dr. or calling and talking to your primary care physician and see what they say. I can't tell if the Dr. you are talking about is your PC or the OBGYN. In any case, I would advise seeing someone else, even within the office you are currently going to. You need to be able to talk to someone and they hear your concerns and do something about it, rather than just glossing over you and giving you a generic response.
If you insist on seeing this Dr. again, lose your fear of intimidation and you need to be frank and tell him look, I don't think that you are really listening to me and my issues and are aware of how much pain I am in and I am looking to you for help. If you are not going to help me, then I am going somewhere else or send in someone else in your practice that will help me because I am not happy with your care. You are also welcome to call the facility and talk to the owner or office manager to express your concerns of what is going on with your Dr. and they may set you up with someone else. Don't worry, you will get through this.
I know it may seem what I am saying doesn't appeal to you after everything you have gone through, but you need to take care of yourself first and your body is telling you something and someone needs to listen (the Dr.).

Re: Advice Needed!! 4-week post op and frustrated with pain
Thank you so much for your advice! I agree with you 100% The Dr. I was referring to is my GYN-surgeon. And even though he may be considered a great surgeon by many, he is lacking the compassion needed in the office exam room.
Thanks again!

Re: Advice Needed!! 4-week post op and frustrated with pain
You are so welcome! I kind of had the same experience with my OBGYN/surgeon and I too relied more on my PC Dr. My OBGYN was an awesome surgeon but not very good people/bedside skills, and she was a female too!
Hang in there, it will get better, probably not as fast as you would like it to, just be good to yourself and listen when you need to rest. A few other things to consider to help the pain is some relaxing tea. I found that chamomile tea helped relax things.

Hi, sorry youre having a rough time...Week 3 & 4 can frequently feel pretty rough, especially if you have other issues going on...Back aches, nerves, swelling, bladder & GI issues are common complaints. Reduced ovarian function post op due to ovary blood supply may contribute to bone/joint pain in your back.It sounds like you have a sciatica issue which is painful-the lower spine & pain radiates to hip & down the back of the thigh. Inflammation overall sounds like its contributing to your swelling, bladder, back issues. During surgery a nerve sounds like its aggrivating groin issue+..
I think if your Dr addresses the inflammation, pain issues, then you can get back on track healing...Ibrophrophen is an anti-inflammatory but there are other prescription meds too. Then you need a pain med. Ask your Dr if s/he thinks you need physical therapy after healed for the back, nerve issue.
I had swelling in my belly, I had a leg pain in my right thigh. It mostly went away during week 5. For lower back pain if you can take ibrophrophen, 45 min later, lay flat on your back, knees up w pillow under knees. a rolled towel under nape of neck. This takes pressure off the lower back. Heat pad pain, cold packs swelling. Swelly belly is common & takes time to go down. Once you heal more & strengthen the abs, then it takes pressure off the back. Some disters use frozen pad & place in underwear for swelling.
Include omega 3 fatty acids in your diet, it helps w inflammation, especially good for the joints... Avocados, salmon, sardines, olive oil, flax oil. Supplements are fish oil or flax oil.
As far as driving, my Dr told me no driving if stjll having oain bc 1 pain sensation can result in a delay response & can put us & others in danger. So no longer on pain meds & no longer having pain. I drove during week 6. I was sore afterwards.
Oh & swelly belly to fully go away can take a few months to many months to go away. Restrict salt, processed foods bc it contributes to retaining fluids. Your Dr is just brushing off your issues.I agree, if you dont get answers & treatment, then find another Dr..I think many of these surgeons just want to do surgery.. If you know what I mean. .I hope you feel better. Update us. 🌹

I think it's important to focus on getting resolved why you are still in so much pain. If your dr won't try to get to the bottom of it, I would see another dr.

Re: Advice Needed!! 4-week post hysterectomy and frustrated with pain
My 4 week post op update!
I explained to my GYN/surgeon- about the pain I was having. So what does he do??? He gives me a full exam, not a peek to check the cuff, But a full on exam! (which put me in even more pain) Saying, well everything looks good. You seem to have healed real well. You can resume all normal activities. Drive, Sex, etc. I''ll see you in a year! And I'm sorry you don't feel well, but it takes about 100 days to heal. I thought my head was going to explode!
SO, his post op instructions have jumped from "total restriction for 8 weeks, to today it was, resume all normal activities at 4 weeks including sex, to "well it takes a 100 days to heal." SO Which one is it??? 8 weeks, 4 weeks, 100 days???? No pain meds.
Just a "Hope you feel better." No looking into the cause of pain, bladder spasms, etc...just a "you are healed, because your insurance just ran out" experience.(it didn't but...) I don't know. I am beyond angry, hurt, violated...I am so mad, I can't even speak without losing it! I'm still trying to process what happened.

Hi, Im sorry, your Dr is an incensitive prick...You can either write your specific areas Of pain & the questions you want answered & call the jerk back & when you leave a message , say youre expecting a return call back. Ask him obviously, you still have pain, how are you going to remedy this & identify what is causing my pain? Tell him the kevel pain you have. Another prescription pain meds? How are you supposed to endure pain w out meds i
or addressing how to remedy the pain?
I would suggest another Dr though bc he left you hanging. As far as bladder spasms, your primary Dr should be able to handle that. Can also order an ultrasound. I would suggest not driving until your pain is gone & Oh my, no sex until you feel better too. That Dr should understand if youre hurting & you do these activities, then youll hurt more! Heat pad for pain ice packs for swelling. I hope you get relief, update us.. All the susters are here for you.

Advice Needed!! 4-week post hysterectomy and frustrated with pain
I,too, am at 4 wks.I had a lot of pain and trouble sitting on the toilet(squatting position) at 1week.After a small stay in the hospital due to elevated white cell count(bladder infection), my dr realized that I had an 8cm(that's a baseball!!) hematoma.this was only confirmed because I had a CT scan in the ER the night before and was originally thought to be an abcess. It eventually burst and I was able to get on with recovery.Ask for a CT if he keeps being an *** and you stick with him.
