Question

Being able to donate your own blood will depend on how low your blood count is. I have seen many people come in to the hosptial with a low count just from giving their blood, it is like they just don't have enough time for the iorn to build them all the way back up, but at least they have their own blood to get then I guess. I was in the same boat you are and just took iron, still am. I refused a transfusion because I didn't want to stay in the hosptial for the extra time it would take. I now blame it on my pain pills, I really should have, my recovery would have been much better.

Sometimes you can have family donate if they have the same blood type. I know in our area it takes a 4 day trun around for the donated blood by family to be ready. Most people ask about family donation at the time it is needed so have never seen anyone actually go for it.

You could also call up your local blood bank and ask them to let you know their percentage rate of cases of diseases that have been transmitted through transfusions. Our blood bank states it is like 99.7 %percent free of transmitted diseases. So the blood supply is actually pretty darn good. It gets screened after a donor gives blood for HIV, Hepatitis (most now also do Hep C) and STD's. If anything shows up that blood is thrown out and the donor counselled.
