Iron supplement?
I have taken a multi-vitamin with iron for years. Now that I have had a hysterectomy and do not bleed monthly, do I still need the daily iron or should I switch to a multi-vitamin with no iron? I am pre-menopausal. Thanks for the tips.

Iron supplement?
Hi MissBug
I haven't needed it since my hyst and I'm not bleeding all the time. I also heard Dr. Oz say that post menopausal women don't need the iron in their multivitamin and he's usually pretty right-on. To be safe it's it never hurts to check with your dr, but I'm pretty sure you don't.

Iron supplement?
I'd check with your Dr. but I'm sure they would have told you if you needed it. They sent me home with Iron tablets but that was because I'd become quite anemic and it went untreated for quite a while I guess.

I was watching oprah today and dr.oz was sayong post menopausul women do not need iron in their multi-vitamin.
I was asking myself the same question because of having the tvh Nov.25.
I guess we can take a normal multi but shouldnt go for the ones with extra iron?!

Iron supplement?
i watched oprah yesterday also and saw dr oz say that women that dont have a period, dont need the multivitamin with iron. i still take one with iron..i'll have to ask my dr if it can be harmful. i added some supplements after my hysterectomy but didnt stop the iron. i feel so great all the time..lots of energy, no aches or pains..i hate to change anything.

Iron supplement?
Safe here. I saw the show & checked my vitamin. It has Iron in it. Not extra iron but a normal amount. I will see what you all say. My doctor is out of town for a few months.

Iron supplement?
Definitely check with your doctor, once you no longer have periods than iron can build up in your body. I don't know how long this takes but a friend's brother actually has to blood drawn to drop his levels of iron. If you donate blood regularly you may want to add some iron but you can get iron from all sorts of foods.

Iron supplement?
Thank you, ladies! I was hesitant to ask ... being 2 plus years out from surgery ... but you all make great points. I see my doc next week and will ask ... and yes, I donate blood regularly and iron has always been in the healthy range. Will keep you posted. Thanks!

Iron supplement?
I did find out in a nutrition / wellness book from Prevention Magazine / Rodale press that post menpausal women need 8 milligrams of iron a day. Seems like most of that could come from food.
