Take everything including cervix or no?
I am having a total hyster in a few weeks and have my pre-op appt with my surgeon the week before the surgery to ask any last questions. I am trying to decide whether to ask her to take everything including the cervix or not. I am taking both ovaries and the uterus due to endometriosis for the last 15 years. My mother-in-law who has been a RN for over 20 years advised to take the cervix also since I am a higher risk of developing cervical cancer due to carrying the HpV virus for almost 19 years, she is thinking pre-emptive is a good idea. Anyone done this and have any thoughts on this?

Re: Take everything including cervix or no?
There are a lot of different points of view on keeping the cervix or not. Personally, I spoke with my doctor about having my removed. My main concern is the mini-periods that can happen. However, because cancer does run in my family, my mother had a TVH for pre-cancerious cells & my grandmother had a TAH because of cancer 30 years ago. I am keeping my overies, but everything else is being taken.

Re: Take everything including cervix or no?
I also have HPV and came very close to cervical cancer last year. I considered keeping my cervix due to my fear of sexual function. My Dr would have complied with whatever I decided but strongly recomended that I take the cervix out. I read enough positive outcomes here, and from friends that I am totally comfortable with it coming out now. For us HPV carriers, its just not worth the risks of keeping it.

Cathimm-
Did your doctor call it a total hysterectomy? If so, you may be scheduled to take your cervix out as well. A total hysterectomy is uterus and cervix, and a supracervical hysterectomy is just the uterus.
Personally, I am 22 and I had uterus, cervix, and tubes out. I think that because of the greater risk for cervical cancer, the possibility of mini periods, and because of everything else getting removed, I would preemptively remove the cervix. I have amazing orgasms without it (and I'm only 3 weeks out of surgery.)
