Water Bed and recovery?!?

I'm am reaching out to anyone who has a waterbed and their advise during recovery.

Our bed is one with the 3 wooden sides and, depending the type of matteress you have, it may feel like you're in the middle of a lake! Ours has baffles so you can't tell when someone gets in or out or moves around. However, it can be challenging to get out of sometimes especially when things are acting up in the tummy area.

Since our two DD's have moved out the only other bed in the house is a toddler bed.

What do I do...

Should I plan on sleeping on the couch instead of my comfy bed?

Thanks,
connie

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I am so glad you asked that. I have one too and am scheduled for next week. Everytime I get in and out I wonder what I will do when I come home. I know once I get in I will be more comfortable than anywhere else but I can't stand the thought of having to wait for someone to rescue me.

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I have a water bed...
and didn't even try it for a pretty long time. There was no way I wanted to even try getting out of it in the morning. I slept on the coach for about 2-3 weeks after.

Water Bed and recovery?!?

When I was PG with our 2nd DD - my DH had to pull me out of bed. I can only imagine what that looked like.

We were thinking about getting an air mattress with a frame - saw one at Wally World a couple of weeks ago - for my mom when she visits during Christmas. I guess we'll need to get that earlier and set up in living room for me.

I would really prefer my bed - it's so comfyyy!

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I don't currently have a waterbed but had them in the past. All I can tell you is that pre-surgery I was limber as a wet noodle, but after surgery with only very small incisions (had laproscopic surgery) I felt like a turtle who had been turned over on it's back. I needed help getting out of bed and off the couch. I can't imagine how difficult a water bed would be to get out of. You may be better off in the long run to sleep on the couch for at least the first week. Good luck!

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I ask my mom and she said there was no way she could sleep on hers. She said it felt like her insides were jiggling around. If you had a tummy binder you might be able to do it. I just dont know as I have not yet had my surgery. Best wishes!!!!

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I don't have a water bed anymore (though when I did, I couldn't get out when pregnant, I would have to roll back and forth till I had enough momentum to catapult myself out, don't suggest that after surgery!) I have read that stairs can be a problem, and I hate to be locked away in my bedroom away from everyone, so I am borrowing an air mattress and setting it up in the living room. I am planning on sleeping there and moving onto the couch during the day for a change. Good luck!

Dove - I'm also thinking about the air mattress. Let me know how that works and good luck on your surgery!

Cheers

Water Bed and recovery?!?

I have a water bed and needed DH help getting out of bed for the first few days. I'll always remember how wonderful it felt to lay in that bed the day I got home from the hospital. lol

After a few day I was able to get out on my own by swinging my legs and and using my arms to get my self up.

Water Bed and recovery?!?

Everyone is different. I had a TAH at age 36 and am very active. Have 3 kids, clean houses, and exercise. I had no trouble whatsoever getting in and out of my full flow mattress, low to the floor with wood sides waterbed. I had to be careful turning over to get in position to get out, but slowly managed on my own spendidly.
I spent the first night home from the castle in my son's hard bed thinking the waterbed would be impossible. I wanted my own bed and tried the next day and was pleasantly surprised that it was not an issue for me. I love my waterbed and was glad to be in it. It actually supported my sore stomach much better than a hard bed could.
Good luck with it. At least give it a try and find out before ruling it out entirely.
