Two months of pain meds and upcoming hysterectomy on May 13

I am quite concerned with with how well they will be able to manage my pain after surgery. Started on tramadol March 7. Then upgraded to hydrocodin in April. I have a high tolerance to pain. Unfortunately I waited so long to go to the Dr that by the time I couldn't function anymore.

Anyone have experience with this?

Oh.....I have multiple fibroids on uterus, dr said uterus was also twisted, a mass on my left ovary that is growing, and cysts on my right ovary.

Re: Two months of pain meds and surgery May 13

I think that you might find that the surgery pain is less than the pain you are already experiencing. I felt better immediately after surgery than I had in a few years. They had just tylenol and toradol in my iv, only the first several hours after surgery. They took the iv out later the night of surgery and that was it, I never needed any more meds. Many people have said that gas pain is worse than the surgery pain, but I really didn't have a big problem with that either. There are so many meds available, I'm sure that you will get your pain controlled. Best of luck!

Two months of pain meds and upcoming hysterectomy on May 13

I have experience with this. I was concerned about the exact same thing.

I had knee surgery in January, & was on narcotic pain meds for 6 weeks post op, then on & off pain meds prior to my hysterectomy. Due to where I was at in physical therapy right before my hysterectomy, I was on pain meds fairly regularly leading up to my hysterectomy.

My pain was controlled extremely well post op. I very quickly found myself taking far fewer pain meds post op compared to what I was taking pre op. My belly hurt more prior to my surgery than it does post op!

Good luck, & definitely discuss your concerns with your Dr, as you have a very valid concern.

I was on a lot of pain meds before surgery and after I took what was recommended. The pain after is dift and got less every day, except now and then when I'd have set backs. I still took a Norco at night if I needed for a few wks after surgery. Take what you need and don't worry about it. just focus on healing.

Re: Two months of pain meds and upcoming hysterectomy on May 13

My experience was that doctors want to make sure you are pain free, because pain delays healing and makes you not want to get up and move around, which is very important.

I remember when I woke up from the operation, I was told I had been given two morphine shots and I asked if I had any pain. I said "a little bit, but I can manage." I was told, "No. You can't have any pain," and was immediately given a third shot.

Also, any time you are in extreme pain, don't be afraid to call the nurses and let them know. It could be a problem other than normal post-surgery pain. The second night in hospital after surgery, was in excruciating pain all night, but thought it was just normal post-surgery pain and didn't want to be a nuisance. Finally, at 5 am, I couldn't take it, so I pressed the call button to request pain meds. Turns out my catheter tube had gotten stuck under my bum and my catheter had been blocked all night. Once it was drained, the pain went away. The nurse asked why I hadn't called earlier.

Re: Two months of pain meds and upcoming hysterectomy on May 13

Hi gaelynne...I am having my hyster on the same day! I also have been on hydrocodin for the last two weeks to try to control the pain of uterine spasms due to post ablation and tubal syndrome but it doesn't seem to touch it lately. At this point I am glad to get the surgery just to stop these pains.

I was told by my doctor that they will work with patients to control the pain. I am sure your doctor will work with you on a pain management plan and you will find something that works.
