Upcoming hysterectomy on 5/23 - same day surgery?

When I scheduled my surgery they told me it was a day surgery!!! I am shocked! They can take out your organs then send you home right away, that seem unethical to me. They rescheduled my time and I asked if they were really going to send me home that day and she told me there is a chance they will keep me overnight. I just know I would feel better at the hospital. I'm a single mom with 4 kids and the thought of even going through all this scares me. But to not even have some rest at the hospital. What is their criteria for keeping you?

What kind of procedure are you having? How old are your children? From reading these boards, it seems that most stay at least one night...more if you are having abdominal.

I had LAVH and was at the hospital for a total of 6.5 hours (surgery was 3.5 hours), and that was just fine for me. A friend stayed with me that first night--and we just hung out and watched tv. I slept great in my own bed. I am a single mom as well, and my 6-year-old was with his dad that night.

I was in the hospital for 23 hours (overnight) but it was considered "same day" surgery and the insurance company was billed accordingly.

It is not uncommon to go home within 23 hours, unless you are having an abdominal.

I was home 9 hours after surgery and wouldn't have had it any other way. I rested better at home.

I had a DvH with everything removed. I arrived at the hospital at 6:30am and was home in bed by 5:30pm and slept.

I had surgery at noon and left at 5 the next day. It was considered 23 hour observation. Go figure. I was glad to stay.

i am having surgery this Friday davinci procedure and he told me if I was his first surgery i can go home the same day. we will see

It all depends. All the nurses insisted it was an overnight stay for me (LAVH) but my Dr said it was my choice if I wanted to go home or stay. I had surgery at 7:30, was in my room by 10:30, was up walking by 12:30, and was on my way out the door by 3:30. My husband's boss' wife had a complete hysterectomy. a couple months ago performed by the same Dr and she stayed overnight. I was GLAD to get home, the same day surgery floor was very busy and noisy the day I was there, I wasn't even able to nap with narcotics!
