help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

My surgery was jan 5th. I just found out that I have a bladder infection.I am in pain and have been. I have had to call my doctor several times for pain medication. I finally got relief with percocet. I tried to call Friday for a refill and was told "no" I am very upset and feel very angry. This has been so hard, and now I'm afraid to ask my doctor for anything. I feel like they think I'm a drug addict. What do I do? I have an appointment weds. But weds is a long way away to have to suffer through this. Please help me.

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

Call your Dr. and if they won't give you narcotic ask if they have a non-narcotic. I had Toradol after surgery. Or ask about OTC pain meds like take Advil and 2 hrs later take tylenol. They may be willing to help with advice, but not narcotic. Maybe they could move appointment sooner. Have you tried a heating pad this might help some Q pharmicist could give advice about OTC drugs. Good luck I hope you get some releif. Do you have an abdominal binder? You could see if this made the pain better or worse. Take it easy.

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

If you are desperate enough, go to the ER and get a pain shot... that's a pain to have to do that, but if you need something now, that's what the ER and urgent cares are for.

Is the pain from the bladder infection a burning urinary pain? If so, you may need some of the over the counter UTI relief medication.... AZO Standard is one of them. I hope you are also on antibiotics for the infection?

Or is the pain from the surgery and complicated by the bladder infection?

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

The pain has been constant. Its both a horrible burning and cramping. I've tried heating pads tylenol, everything. They called me in an antibiotic for the bladder infection, and I was afraid to ask for pain medication because the nurse I spoke to Friday was so awful. All I've done is cry. My appoinment is weds. I tried to get in today and couldn't, and tues she is in surgery all day. 2 days is a long time to wait for relief. I don't want to be a pest, but I feel terrible.

Do you have a different Dr. you could call like a family Dr.? They could help with UTI. Since they have not given you a prescription they might be willing. Or at least willing to see you in office and help you.

Not to mention, I'm not certain its even a bladder infection since they haven't even seen me yet?

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

Ok, if you think it is burning pain from the UTI, ask for a prescription of "pyridium" for the urinary symptoms, or go pick up the AZO Standard over the counter (or ask the pharmacist for the house brand of the pyridium). That stuff will turn your pee orange, but will help TREMENDOUSLY within just a few hours.

If that doesn't help, get yourself to the urgent care or ER... they can give you a shot of Toradol, Demerol or something else that will help you make it through until Wednesday... they could also determine for you if you really DO have a urinary tract infection.

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

I feel like I keep hearing the doctor say, by this point I shouldn't haqve pain? Is that true? I just really think its unfair for someone to tell you when you "should" and "shouldn't" feel better? I cannot be the only woman who is still feeling gut wrenching pain at the 2 week mark? I just was so let down, and angry that the doctor, #1 dismissed me without actually speaking to me, and #2 that the nurse was so short with me like I was a pain in the ***. Ughhhh.

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

True, everyone feels pain differently. We can't expect everyone to feel great at the same time, just because they had the same surgery.

BUT, if you are dealing with a bladder infection in addition to the normal recovery issues, you are dealing with more than the rest of us did... so it would be understandable you would be feeling even worse than the typical patient who does not have a bladder infection with their hysterectomy.

So, get some help for the bladder pain first, and maybe that's the major source of your pain. You may feel a lot better after you get that under control.

Re: help ~ afraid to ask my doctor for anything

Its just so frustrating. I have a 6 year old boy, and as people with children know, moms aren't exactly afforded the luxary of just laying down and getting rest. I entered into this hysterectomy for relief from pain, so imagine my surprise to still feel it. I realize this will take time, but honestly I feel like I've bee this way forever. I am also a full time student, and have had to miss class. I'm crying all the time, and I really feel as though the more I keep hearing I should feel great, the more discaouraged I become.
