Pre-op and brusing

Hi all,

Sorry I have some more questions. I went to my pre-op last week even though my surgery isn't until September. I had various tests including blood tests. Since then my body has come out in a lot of bruises especially where I had the blood tests. I've never had this before. I'm currently taken esmya - would this cause it? I'm a bit worried incase the consultant missed anything more serious.

Also, I explained that I had joined this Forum - the nurse and consultant had never heard of it but both checked it out whilst I was there and they were really impressed with the support everyone has been giving. They are now going to recommend it to others.

Thank you.

Re: Pre-op and brusing

Bruising at the needle stick site is common. On me it usually means they had to dig for the vein and/or didn't leave pressure on long enough after the needle is removed.

If it starts to swell up (like fluid is building up) call the doc. Or if the bruising continues to get bigger. Especially if the drug you mentioned is a blood thinner.

Re: Pre-op and brusing

Expect some bruising from the surgery also. I had big ones on my ribcage under the arms! Probably something to do with how they had me strapped onto the table. Didn't hurt though, so didn't matter much. Good luck with your surgery!

Re: Pre-op and brusing

Mention the bruising to your surgery team. I had a bunch of bruising (from a belt test, I'm a martial artist) before a procedure, and on my way to the operating theater my nurse went rogue and wheeled me into a separate room to ask me if I was ok, if I needed some one to intervene with my husband. It gave me a good laugh (my dh is the sweetest thing) but it made me feel good that she would ask on my behalf. But when we got to the OR she gave a big speech to the rest of the team about how they all needed to be gentle with me or I'd get em. Broke the tension. But in all seriousness, let your team know so they can monitor.
