Question - Premarin Cream Externally Premarin Cream Externally

Hi,
My dr has prescribed Premarin cream for me to use on my perineum for the vaginal fissures that won't go away. Anyone have advice? I am so afraid to use it as I read the terrible side effects!!

Re: Premarin Cream Externally

I would try it if I had something like fissures. Those sound worse than any side effects to me. I have used premarin and had very good results from it. If your doctor has prescribed it, then s/he has a good reason. I'd definitely want to heal.

Re: Premarin Cream Externally

I am using it internally and have had no problem. I don't think your Dr. would prescribe it unless you needed it and it would help you. I think it sounds better then surgery, so I would definitely try it. Good luck.

Re: Premarin Cream Externally

There's another option as well. Estrace Cream is bioidentical and made from Yam rather than the horse urine. It is used for the same purposes as the Premarin Cream.

Re: Premarin Cream Externally

Horse urine?? Oh, yuck..okay that is kind of weird. What does bioidentical mean?? That it's the same except the urine??

Re: Premarin Cream Externally

(((dani32))) Premarin cream is a mixture of natural hormones, some of them estrogens, isolated from the urine of pregnant mares -- but of course there is no urine in Premarin! In fact, the very first attempt at hormone replacement involved isolating sex hormones from the urine of pregnant human women, but of course that would not be commercially viable.

Bioidentical means that the hormones are the same as your ovaries made -- the exact same molecules, whether they may have been isolated from the urine of pregnant women or made in a lab or factory from soy or wild yam sources.

Premarin is bioidentical to horses, meaning that if a female horse had a problem with dryness, Premarin would be a bioidentical HRT for her. For us, the estrogens estradiol, estriol and estrone are bioidentical.

There are plenty of human bioidentical vaginal estrogen choices if you are interested in those. Estring is one - it's a flexible plastic ring that's inserted vaginally and replaced every three months. Vagifem is another - it's a tiny pill packaged in a little applicator. Estrace cream is another one - it's a cream that feels much like Premarin cream.

I've used Premarin cream as well as Vagifem and both of them are effective for dryness. I like Vagifem a lot because it's convenient, easy to use and mess-free, but it's more expensive.

As for the side effects listed in the package insert, keep in mind that that is legal language required on any product that contains any amount of estrogen at all; it doesn't mean you should expect to experience any of those things, especially since using a small amount vaginally you will not appreciably raise the estrogen level in your bloodstream.

I would give it a try... hopefully it will do the trick for those fissures.

s,
-Linda
