List of needs preop
I'm one week way from TAH, and was seeking advice on things that I need to purchase before going into the hospital. Things that will make recovery better, easier, etc. Anyone have a "checklist"?

List of needs preop
I am 2 1/2 wks away from my TAH. As far as check-Lists, I copied and pasted from the Check-List area in this site. I have to make sure that everything is going to be taken care of while I'm at the castle and durring recovery.
I'm putting together a 3-ring binder with the following:
1) Information about TAH
2) Pre-Op needs
3) What to expect emotionally as I am very "moody" right now
4) What to do/not to do when I come home
5) A list of morning routines so the kids don't get off thier rockers just because I am
Although this is giving me a sense of control, I am probably just wasting my time and paper. I know they love me and will try, but being only female in the house (BF & sons 15 & 12) I am expecting a great-big mess when it is finally time to get back to my old self again.

There is a great place here called checkpoints. It will give you ideas of what you may want to do. However, here are a few things that helped me after surgery.
Clean what you can now as you won't be able to do ANY heavy cleaning and even just little things like during or dishes will be difficult.
Think of things that are on top or bottom shelves that you might need during recovery and move them to easy reach places (there will be no bending or reaching above for a while)
Shop for things you might want ahead of time. Special foods etc. Set up an area in your recovery room (bedroom or livinging room) so you can have things you need close by.
Most important - be ready to realx and take the time to get well.

List of needs preop
Before my TAH, I filled my freezer to feed the family and stocked up on soups, yogurt and popcicles for myself. (I did not have much of an appetite the first 2 weeks)
For the hospital, I purchased all the things listed on this website and found I didn't use most of the items. My most beloved item was the quilt I brought with me as it made me feel more at home. Other than that, everything else in my suitcase went untouched with the exception of my toothbrush, deodorant and face cloths. I didn't even bother brushing my hair as it was too knotted, so I kept it in a Scrunchii. I also sucked on a lot of Life Savers since I am a smoker and needed to keep my mouth "busy".
For home I purchased 2 packages. of "granny panties" and only used one of them (9 pair) the first 2 weeks. I was back in my bikini panties after that. I also bought some comfy draw-string sweat pants which I basically lived in. (Still wear them as jeans are too uncomfortable even at 5 weeks post op)
The one item I do suggest is a grabber! I used mine constantly the first 2 weeks as I was ALWAYS dropping things!
Good Luck to You. Hope this helps!

I also didn't open my bag at the hospital except for 3 items. As a plus size woman those hospital gowns wern't the most comfy and after getting sick before they could put me in another one I requested use of my own jammies (then I didn't have to change to go home either, just put the robe I h ad brought and off I went). I kept a chapstick close by and used it often. Last I had brought several bottles of water and it was nice to have them as the hospitals water wasn't great and I didn't have to constantly ask the nursing staff to bring me more.

List of needs preop
I never opened my bag of goodies I brought either. Although, I had a TVH and was in at 6am Thursday and discharched at 11:30am Friday. I was too "drugged" after the surgery and through the night to care about anything but pain relief and sleep. Early in the morning, things moved really fast as they took out the catheter, I got up, got dressed, and was discharged.
Before the surgerry, I had cleaned everything and did all of the laundry. My girls are 9,7,and 4 so I needed everything cleaned. The most important thing I did was make a list for dh for when to pay what bill and who to take where. Also, my church arranged meals and they sent a schedule I put together with the list I made. It kinda helped to keep the households routine going, even if I wasn't doing it.
That got us through the first week. I never bought extra undies or anything special, I just live in my sleeper jammy bottoms and sweatshirts.
I do have to say that if I had to do it again, knowing now what I needed and didn't need, I would still pack a bag with everything that the checkpoints suggests. I think it helps to give us a sense of control in a situation that we have absolutely no control over.
Good luck with your surgery.

List of needs preop
I used earplugs lots and lots!
I loved having my own jammies in the hospital as well as a cami with built in bra, and could not have handled the itchyness I had without it.
I packed somethings for my husband to do in my bag, rather than so many things for myself, including changes of clothes for him rather than for me as he did not really think of that since he was thinking of me and he was very grateful!
Best wishes.

List of needs preop
i live by myself, and wanted to be sure the house was well stocked, not just for the immediate time when home from the hospital, but for a while. what i really stocked up on were the heavy items such as kitty litter, cat food, laundry detergent - that way i didn't have to carry them in the store, lug them into the house, etc. I also stocked up on non perishable items such as paper towels, toilet paper, and that sort of thing, just so the couple of months or so after the surgery would be easy when going to the store.
the only thing i purchased for the surgery was a couple of pairs of new pajamas. it made me feel good to be wearing something nice. and, i wore them in the hospital after the first day/night, once the catheter was removed, and i was starting to walk the halls - i did lots of that! i didn't bring much to the hospital...just the pj's, a robe, toothbrush/toothpaste, my own face moisturizer, and i brought a couple of books and magazines.
best wishes - i hope your surgery and recovery go smoothly.
