Can't sleep

My surgery is Monday so its the final stretch. I'm now having an almost impossible time sleeping. I should get my phone call from the hospital today. Any tips on sleeping techniques?

It's tough sleeping when you're feeling anxious. I try a couple of different things to distract myself. Sometimes I'll read 'fluffy' gossipy stuff (which I NEVER read otherwise) to just get my mind out of my own worries and reality. I'm sort of embarrassed to admit how much stuff I've been reading on Kate Middleton to just take my mind off any of my problems or real world issues. Another that I learned in therapy is to create a safe and nurturing world in your mind where you can go and rest. It can be something real or imagined. Sometimes I pretend to go to a lovely park and walk around or have a picnic with friends or I imagine a Disney like world where I have little animal friends in the forest and we sit around a fire and roast marshmallows. I know it all sounds ridiculous, but it definitely has helped me just get my mind to stop churning over whatever is bothering me and just distract myself enough to fall asleep. And of course on desperate nights there are sleep meds - I just use benadryl since it's the same active ingredient in sleep meds. Good luck and hope you get some sleep!
