Advice needed re scheduling and waiting

Dear sisters in waiting:

I will be having a hysterectomy early in march (exact date unknown). I haven't made a decision yet as to ovaries and other details, but I am comfortable with my ability to review the literature and listen to others and then make my own decision.

My question today is whether to have the surgery a bit earlier or a bit later in my window of opportunity. Here are the factors:
1. I have fast growing largish fibroids. Not there 7-8 months ago, now uterus sizee of 4 month pregnancy. I am in significant pain and discomfort, enough that it required ER visit 2 weeks ago which is how I learned about those fibroids. I have a hard time getting through a whole day of work and spend the evening experiencing what feels like alien fetuses kicking and clawing (really just odd crampiness) and a confused uterus contracting and twitching and hurting.
2. She could schedule me in 3 weeks but she agreed that miserable as I am I will be MORE miserable if I miss a once in a lifetime trip to Hawaii where I will be a big mucky muck at my conference, meet by best friend in the world, and have some relaxing time to myself.
3. I need to then wait enough after the trip to get over jet lag and run pre-op errands and get my office life settled.
4. So that brings me to March 1. Now here is my questions:
(a) If I schedule my 6 weeks starting March 1 I will then need to immediately take a vacation week in order to take older son on college visits during spring break. That would mean 7 weeks away from work. And my first week back my other son has spring break so I will need to take some time off... AND I don't have enough sick days to cover 6 weeks (I do have short term disability at 2/3 pay). OR
(b) I can push surgery until March 8 and use my 6th week of disability to take my older son to college visits. He can share driving, I don't have to do every walking tour. He is only a junior so it is more for him to get a general feel for school and to decide on size and type of school. Then, the 7th week, my first week back, I could work part time and split coverage of younger son's week off with my H.

So, what say you? If I can pick A or B?

Much thanks, Susan

s Susan

don't miss the trip to Hawaii. If you re-read your own post, it sounds like you are most comfortable with option B. It's funny how we can sometimes talk (or in this case, write) our decisions all by ourselves.

Regardless of what you choose, have a great trip and spend some memorable time with your sons. Work will go on without you. Trust me. I was one of those that thought everything would stop when I went out on my 1st sick leave of 3. Amazingly, the place is still standing.
