Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I am having a hysterectomy in January for fibroids on my uterus. I am trying to decide between vaginal and abdominal. I haven't had any children but I don't want to be out of work for any longer than needed. Any suggestions anyone can give me would be most helpful.
Thanks!!

Re: Deciding between Abdominal vs. Vaginal Hysterectomy
I can only speak on the vaginal hysterectomy, but I was very pleased with my quick recovery and small incisions made in the abdomen. I imagine an abdominal hysterectomy would take longer to heal due to the size and depth of the scar. I actually had a laparoscopic vaginal assisted hysterectomy which is the reason I had the three small incisions. Two on the lower abdomen and one in the belly button.

Re: Deciding between Abdominal vs. Vaginal Hysterectomy
When I was in hospital I shared a room with a gal that had a vaginal hysterectomy and I had the abdominal. There was a huge difference in our recoveries..... for example: she was up and walking a day or two before I was, she had the energy to shower herself on Day 2 of our stay and she was released from hospital after 3 days. I was unable to get out of bed and start walking immediately because of how dizzy/weak that I felt and I did have a shower but with lots of assistance from the NA's and I was in hospital for 4 days & nights.
In my situation and because I had endometriosis (was diagnosed with Stage II when I was 26) I had no choice but to go with the abdominal style with the 6" incision. My doctor felt that there would be a lot of scar tissue and adhesions and she was so right. In fact, my Stage II endo had turned into Stage IV and part of my bladder and bowel had adhered to my uterus. Your recovery will be as unique as the circumstances surrounding why you had to have the surgery done to begin with.
Best of luck to you

Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I found out 15minutes prior to surgery that I was having TAH kept my ovaries, due to my uterus being to large from fibroids and cysts. I was a little upset but had no choice really. I got the all clear to resume life yesterday and I'm 5 weeks post op today. So it depends on urself and ur surgeon as to which way is best. Good luck

Re: Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
Due to the size of my fibroids I knew beforehand that I would need an abdominal incision. The surgeon did a 5 inch horizontal incision which now, almost 6 weeks post-op, is healing really well and feel good. I was in hospital for 3 nights and my pain was very well managed.

Re: Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I had abdominal surgery because that's what my surgeon said would give him to most room to look around to see if my cancer had spread. I sure wasn't going to argue with that! I had a 7" vertical incision. However, I also had minimal pain, no complications and an easy recovery.
The nurses had me up and walking the morning after surgery. By the second day, I was taking myself out to walk laps around the ward. I was released on the third day. At home, I as able to take care of myself and my cats. I went back to work at a part-time desk job at four weeks, with a restriction on lifting 30-40 lb boxes in the archives area. Life was back to normal at eight weeks.

Re: Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I think the hard thing with this is that people's recoveries are so different. They say an abdominal hyster is the hardest recovery, but I had one and have had a really easy recovery, two nights in the hospital, back to driving, running errands, etc beginning of week 2 and walking 2 miles briskly by end of week 3. There are people on my recovery thread who had vaginal and laproscopic procedures who are having a lot harder recovery than me. There are also some that went back to work at 1 week, which I couldn't have done. I think so much depends on you and your surgeon, it is hard to compare.

Re: Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I had a vaginal hyst. It was not assisted laparoscopically in any way. I was up and walking in less than 24 hours. I have not had to take pain meds since day 3. I take them at night to help me sleep. I started driving on day 6. Dr said I could return to work in 10-14 days. This recovery has been so easy.
I can compare it to my c-section recovery and with the low abdominal incision, I could not stand straight upright for 2 weeks. I was in a lot of pain with it but didn't take the meds since I was breastfeeding and those drugs pass through and I didn't want my daughter to get them.
I know a c-section is not exactly the same but I think it should be a close comparison. Of course every one is different and every surgery is different.

Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy?
I had a TAH. I've recovered nicely so far. I was up walking the night after my surgery. I wanted laparoscopic but because I'd never had children my doctor said the risks were too high for women that had never given birth vaginally to have a vaginally assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy. She said you could have tears in the vagina & bleeding because that tissue has never been stretched from giving birth. Only other option was a Davinnci(sp?). My hospital didn't offer it & I would've had to start all over with a new doc & hospital.
