What's the difference

What is the difference between Miralax and stool softeners, sorry but I just don't know, every one is saying get gas x and stool softeners, can someone explain also give me brand names so I can be prepared. I am also getting a rectocele repaired, so you see my concerns, everything has got to GO smoothly. (he he) Thanks Cat

My surgery is 11/7. I have to do a bowel prep. My doctor asked me to take Miralax to clean out my system along with an laxative. They call it a bowel prep. Nothing to eat the day before my surgery except liquids and jello. Just want you good and clean for surgery day. I think the stool softner is for constipation if you have it following your surgery.

Re: What's the difference

Stool softeners make it 'easier' to go while miralax is an over the counter laxative (according to their website). I didn't have any repairs done, but I do understand your concerns. Be sure to ask your doctor about what you should do after surgery to make things a little easier. Some doctors suggest laxatives, but they are harsh on a delicate post-op system and you should check with your doctor first. My doctor prescribed stool softeners for me along with my post-op pain meds. Also, during recovery, taking short slow walks and drinking plenty of water will help to get things going. You can also add foods to your post-op diet that help get things moving.

Re: What's the difference

I tried Sennokot for 4 days after my surgery and when that didn't work my doctor gave me samples of Miralax to try. And it worked for me. Didn't feel like a laxative, no cramps or gas came along with it, but it did help me to finally "go". I took it every other day for about a week.

Re: What's the difference

When i was caring for someone on pain killers constipation was a constant problem. Miralax really helped and was much gentler than a lot of other laxatives.

Stool softeners help draw water to your poo to make it easier to pass. They are gentle enough that it is often recommended for babies.

Re: What's the difference

Ok this Miralax, I've taken it for about 4 days and nothing yet. should I wait or call doc I'm kinda waiting to call doc for more serious reasons or is this serious, I'm not on the breaking point yet, if ya know what I mean. Dont forget i do have a rectocele so straining is out this has to be oh natural. Advice is welcomed. Cat
