Hysterectomy scheduled for 11/7/14 - Status So Far!

I have not found much online about the stages of a hysterectomy surgery and what to expect before surgery and at the hospital so I thought I'd share.

On October 20th I had to have a biopsy on my uterus to make sure I didn't have cancer or any other unusual cells, which would allow me to have a vaginal hysterectomy. The pain was so bad I actually passed out on the table and bled all over the floor which was not fun in any way! But I passed the test I guess.

October 27th I had blood drawn, a flu shot and a tetanus shot (because I was due for both) and I met with my doctor. I also gave a urine sample. I went over what to expect at the hospital with the doctor and signed a consent form to do the surgery and had him cross off the part of allowing pictures to be taken or med students to assist in surgery.

The night before surgery I can't eat after midnight but I can take my medications in the morning with a sip of water. I received body wipes to sanitize my body after my shower on Thursday night and I have to use the wipes on specific areas of my body based on the picture given to me. I can't shower Friday morning.

When I arrive at the hospital and am prepped for surgery, they will sanitize my body again. I am told my doctor will be with me in the pre-op room (and getting in the nurses' way) and he will walk me to the operating room himself. He will be with me as I go to sleep and will be with me when I wake up. He said I can go to floor 2 for going home the same day or move to floor 8 and spend the night. I opted to spend the night to allow for 24 hours of rest before I head home.

I am having my uterus and cervix removed. I am looking forward to this surgery so I can start healing and begin my new life. I will keep you posted on my surgery/recovery.

Re: Scheduled for 11/7/14 - Status So Far!

Hi BusyBee16 to HysterSisters!

The reason you do not see "staging" for a hysterectomy is probably due to the fact that everyone is different, every doctor is different, and every hospital is different. While there may be common threads, there are some vast differences.

Some women wait months for their surgery, and can be dealing with issues for years. Some women are like me and have surgery very rapidly (10 days between finding out I needed a hysterectomy and being in the OR ). Some women do a bowel prep, some do not. Some do an antiseptic wash, others do not.

The one commonality is that we are all in this together. And no matter what path has brought us here, we are now together in this supportive community of wonderful and strong women.

I agree that every experience is different. My experience before surgery was nothing like yours. Drs and hospital each have their own procedures an recommendations. It doesn't mean one way is better than another.

I have had biopsies. I can't say I enjoyed the experiences, but for me it was more like having a few period cramps, nothing awful like (((BusyBee16))) experienced. I just spotted a tiny bit afterward. Don't expect it to be bad. It may be much easier.
