Are there any side effect from removing uterus?

Hello,
I am suggested to have hysterectomy due to my fibroids are big.
My doctor said he is not comfortable to have Laparoscopic due to my size of fibroids and referred me to another doctor for a second opinion tomorrow. I can keep the ovaries and cervix. So far 3 of my friends had uterus removed for years don't notice any side effect.

Thanks.
Mini

Re: Are there any side effect from removing uterus?

Hi Mini, I'm not a doctor but if you look under "pre-op" on the top of this page there are some good articles. Just things to know, and some do talk about your uterus.

I had mine removed 6 days ago along with my cervix. I couldn't be happier I did it because my periods were causing me more trouble than anything.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns and I also agree to get the second opinion. Healing is a lot easier with laporoscopic.

Re: Are there any side effect from removing uterus?

I am 3 weeks post-op today and aside from healing from the surgery, I feel the same as before. As you can see from my signature, I only had the top of the uterus removed. Since my fibroid was football sized, I thought I would have a big empty feeling but that isn't the case. My insides do feel a bit odd when driving in the car but that is about it. My recovery from the surgery has been excellent so far with very little pain. The only pain if you can call it that was a pulling sensation from the incision when getting up or sitting down. Aside from that, I was pretty well pain free right from the day after the operation. I know I am one of the lucky ones as not everyone has the same experience.

I had uterus, tubes, & ovaries removed 9 weeks ago. I'm not feeling that much difference, except better for not having migraines with periods every 2 weeks.

Re: Are there any side effect from removing uterus?

I had uterus and cervix removed a week ago (LAVH), also for fibroids. I feel like I did before, minus this horrible lump that used to create constant pressure, and minus needing to pee much more often that I liked, and minus the Red Sea aka my horribly prolific periods, and minus feeling really beat. So far it's a total win.
