I put the dog food container on the counter before surgery. I take the scoop and without bending pour it into the bowl on the floor .. Yes some food pebbles go all over the floor but the dog does not care, he eats them anyway, i do the same with water .. Just fill a large cup or jug and standing straight just pout it in and hope most makes it into the bowl .. Which it does

NewinNC2012,
Great ideas...duh, sometimes my brain is just so foggy I don't think of simple things to make my life a little easier.

Re: Pulled myself up onto the counter!! How dumb!!
Yeah--I'm an English Professor, so I don't have to do any heavy lifting (just books, but I have a lot of returning students who can help). I've been working up to sitting up gradually. Before I had my surgery, I asked my doctor what my chances of going back at the beginning of the semester were, and she said it should be fine. She confirmed that at my three week post-op, but I've been "practicing" sitting up for longer periods so that I can get used to it. Also, I've practiced standing. I have two classes per day, each 50 minutes each, and I'll be standing for those, but there is a chair in the classroom I can use if I get tired. I have office hours after that, but I'm able to leave early in the day--noon on MWF and 1:45 on TTh--so it's not bad. I also have a very comfy office chair that has good back support. I'll do a lot of my prep at home (after a nap, I suspect). My doctor said I should be fine as long as I'm careful not to bend or lift.
I have a thirty-minute commute. I was driving by my second week. My doctor seems really lenient with the driving restriction; she said I could drive as soon as I was off narcotics. I know a lot of it has to do with where I live, though. I live out in the country--straight stretches of highway, and not much traffic, so there are fewer chances of having emergency stops (now that deer season is over.)
I will definitely let you know how it goes. I'm going in to work briefly tomorrow, just to make copies and such.
