urgent question, surgery 9/12 and just read pre op no asprin...oh no!

oh my..........my surgery is monday at 8am. i just read the pre-op...read it 4 weeks ago and layed it aside since nothing was pressing then. what do I do? i I just read no asprin products for 2 weeks prior.... know this is for bleeding, is it that important...do you think they will change my date? That would be terrible!!! I have had emergency surgery in the past with motrin use and all was fine, that was to take out gall bladder, appendix & hernia. it's a weekend, what should I do...so lost and really upset now~ Please help!

Well, I know for me that I take Bextra (now off the market-had leftovers) for menstrual pain and my cycle will be coming to an end-but still on right before my surgery. This is a drug similar to motrin.

I was told to stop taking it a couple of days prior to surgery and have been given Vicoden for pain if I need something.

Check w/ your doctor to put your mind @ ease-but please be sure to let him know.

(((Nicole))),

Yes, it is very important that you find a way to let your Dr know about the aspirin. Try calling his phone service (during the day) and leaving a message for him letting him know about the surgery and the aspirin. You might also call the hospital and ask for the pre-op nurse there and let them know about the aspirin.

The more they know ahead of time, the better off everyone will be. You may have to reschedule, but it is better to reschedule than to risk a bleeding problem.

Did you take aspirin or motrin? The preop instructions mean the real Bayer aspirin stuff or anything with aspirin in it (exederin - I think). Motrin, tylenol, advil are all OK to take before surgery. Aspirin thins your blood and then you may bleed too much during surgery, that's why you need to avoid it.

I'd also call the pre-op at the hospital. I had a similar situation last year when I had my gallbladder out. I told them about my perscription drugs but forgot about the asprin. I called the pre-op nurse as soon as I remembered (about 3 days before) and stopped taking it then. It turned out to be ok... but you need to check it out ASAP. In the mean time you might consider dermacare patches. Good luck to you.

I am having surgery on 27th Sept and have been told to cease aspirin 7 days prior to my surgery. This is aspirin only. The paracetamol I take is fine and can be continued as normal.

If it is aspirin, definitely try to find out asap.
