Need a surgeon for laparascopic myomectomy in Pennsylvania

I cancelled my hysterectomy scheduled for 2/13. I am not feeling like one pedunculated fibroid should cost me my whole uterus. I have no heavy bleeding or pain, just pressure on my bladder (so I pee every hour or two). Doctor said "well, you're 43, you don't need your uterus anymore, so why not just take it out?". He also told me a laparascopic myomectomy could be done, but he doesn't do them. So, help me out ladies, I either need to find a surgeon who can do a laparascopic myomectomy, or go with my second choice: Uterine ARtery Embolization-but I am a little leary about having all those little floaty emboli in there forever, and the risk of it infarcting my ovaries (I'm not ready for an early menopause).

You might try checking www.suggestadoctor.com to see if you can find a surgeon in your area. Otherwise, I would suggest calling your insurance company and asking for a list of names. Additionally, you could call area hospitals and ask for a list of names of surgeons who perform myomectomies. Your GP may also be able to refer you to someone.

As a reminder, the names of physicians must be shared privately via PM or e-mail.

I wish you all the best!

Re: Need a surgeon for laparascopic myomectomy in Pennsylvania

Hi there,
I had a series of pedunculated fibroids removed in 1992 by laparotomy. (In Aust, so I can't help you with a surgeon.) One was the size of a large canteloupe. I went on later to have a normal pregnancy, so I imagine by now you should be able to find someone to do this for you laparoscopically, esp if you are in the USA.
Do you know any nurses, or have friends who can recommend someone?
Good Luck, and keep searching until you find a specialist you are confident & happy with.
All the best.

Re: Need a surgeon for laparascopic myomectomy in Pennsylvania

Thanks for the encouragement. I found a doctor in Binghamton NY who does DaVinci Myomectomy. I don't know much about that, I guess I'll have to do a little research before I make the appointment.

sounds perfect. I'm happy to hear of yet another person who's thinking twice about losing an organ forever.
All the best.

Re: Need a surgeon for laparascopic myomectomy in Pennsylvania

I am currently having myomectomy(ies) done to remove a fibroid....like you I wanted to at least try something less invasive. I am in missouri so my doc won't be much help. Keep looking till you find one you feel confident in...best move I have made so far!

Good luck to ya. Keep us posted.

Re: Need a surgeon for laparascopic myomectomy in Pennsylvania

So, here's the update. I met with the Davinci surgeon who repeated my pelvic US in the office. I found out that whoever read the last one read it wrong. The fibroid is not on the right fundus against the ovary, it is tucked down behind my cervix in a place that the surgeon said would be too hard to do a myomectomy laparascopically. How do you tell someone a fibroid is at the top of the uterus when in actuality it is at the bottom back? Maybe stand on your head when you read it? I watched this time, so I saw the fibroid's outline and exactly where it is. Anyway, myomectomy is out. Hysterectomy is not something I am ready for, so I am opting for choice #2, uterine artery embolization. I am meeting with the IR on Tuesday 1/27. Hopefully I will not chicken out once I hear about the procedure.

ouch. it sounds like it would be pressing on your bowel. these errors in diagnoses are very frustrating - makes it hard to find a clear picture. Nevertheless, it sounds like you're on a good track. all the best, I hope it goes simply & smoothly for you, and that you're back to good health in no time.
