Painful attempts w BM, 6 days post op TAH
I'm afraid I will rip something open when I have the urge to have a bowel movement. Yesterday was the worst. Finally tried a suppository and a stronger laxative. Today I'm only passing a little stool, but haven't had much food either. My rectum is so painful w some bleeding. And do try to hold a folded towel against my belly.
I slowed down on the oxycodone replacing it with ibuprofen in hopes that my bowels would be happier.
Any suggestion?

Are you taking a stool softener? I was so afraid of the pressure from pushing, that I took colase or peri colase for 20 days, until my bm was completely back to normal and regular. Prune juice also helps it along without too much pressure. I ended up avoiding all grains after eating quinoa as part of my dinner for a week, and getting very gassy from it. Fruit also helps. Just make sure you're not eating anything hay might hinder a smooth flow.
Maybe try some Vaseline for the rectum irritation.

I am taking 2 colace per day and Miralax. No grains since I am GF and may hold off on the Quinoa now.

Painful attempts w BM, 6 days post op TAH
I had my tlh on the 25th so one day after yours and I completely understand and am going through the same. What is working for me is the prune juice, I was fortunate enough to have a bm before leaving the hospital on the 27th and everything from the milk of magnesium and the colace what did it for me was the prune juice the nurse gave me the morning I went home. Still feeling the gas pains and discomfort but my belly has gone down a significant amount and I have found relief since having the prune juice again at home. Just becareful not to strain and let the juice do its magic.....hope that helps.

Several have recommended prune juice. Guess I'll try that!
Thanks!

Re: Painful attempts w BM, 6 days post op TAH
I had a TAH as well, and Milk of Magnesia has been my best friend! I had a VERY difficult time until day 8. I tried all kinds of stuff and nothing worked. I tried MOM and it worked within a couple of hours. I've used it a couple of times since and it's never let me down. I also rolled up a towel and held it on my belly. The last few days I have been able to go without the towel. (I'm almost 3 weeks post-op) Before the towel I tried an ice pack and even a pillow (a travel one, not the one I sleep with lol!) Whatever you need to make yourself feel better and relaxed. Don't strain!! Keep taking your stool softeners. Drink lots of water and walk, walk, walk. It stinks but I promise it helps!
Hang in there!

Re: Painful attempts w BM, 6 days post op TAH
I had a nightmare with this, I'd had a bm before leaving hospital but 1 week later I found myself to be completely blocked! I took laxatives and two enemas too no avail. After 36hrs of incredible pain I decided the time had come to go to accident and emergency, once there I was shot up to high heavens with painkillers (it literally felt like I was in labour) the pain was horrendous. They eventually (after a lot of poking and prodding) gave me an enema which looked like a feeding bottle for a lamb, this burnt the hell out of me but thankfully did work. From this experience I go to bed every night and worry its going to happen again, I'm refusing to take my pain killers and I'm taking fiber supplements 3 times aday and I constantly feel there is something trapped in my back passage and I'm constantly trying to push out wind.
The dr at the er told me that my back passage was swollen with the pressure I'd Put on myself and the blockage had blocked my bladder hence the pain I was in, she advices the fibre sups and also a full cup of Luke warm water every morning and a half an hour sit down to let the water move through your system, this seems to be helping me even though I still have a lot of pain in my back passage.
Morale of this story is don't let it get as far as I did! Get yourself into the ER and get it sorted now before you do more damage. Good luck Xxx

Yes, getting bm's going is one of the worst things following surgery. I tried a few things, dear me, the pain from wind\gas was awful, ibs spasms after half a sachet of movicol\laxido was unbearable. Stopped them all, sent husband out for prunes and apricots, drank more water, and it all settled. Sometimes the 'old ways' really are the best. X

Re: Painful attempts w BM, 6 days post op TAH
Hello,
I'm post op about three weeks from A TAH as well. I had the same problem about 6 days before I could have a bowel movement. What helped me was taking Milk of Magnesia.

Hi ButtercupOR,
I was the same, extremly painful BM and always some blood even so I was not straining.
I took Senokot which did soften the stool but did not made it any less painfull.
It WILL get better
The bowl takes some time to fully wake up from the Anaesethic, was moved about and all that.
You will be just fine.
It just takes time, I know easier said than done but except from taking stoll softeners there is not much you can do or speed the healing process up I am affraid.
