Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
Good Morning All
So tomorrow is my pre op appointment, I already had my bloodwork done on the 7th so I am guessing we will go over all that. I already paid my co-payment of $150.00, but also have to pay the hospital their $75.00, I'm thinking we will do that the morning of the surgery. I'm a little curious as to what we will discuss tomorrow, the surgery scheduler went over a lot and mailed additional information that was a bit useful. My surgery is May 9th, it seems like it's approaching fast!!!
So as I mentioned in the "Title", I am trying to quit smoking. I know I can't smoke the morning of the surgery, I have to be at the hospital by 5:30 a.m., and I was already going to quit that day and not pick up another cig after the sugery. I know I should probably quit now but as many smokers know, it can be a hard task! Are there any others out there in HysterSister land that are facing the same dilema with smoking? If so, did you quit? Are you planning on quitting? Thanks for lending me your ears, Have a great day!!!!!!

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
I so tried quiting before my surgery but with all the anxiety and being nervous I wasn't able too!! and now that I am postop it's even harder..with all the painkillers and boredom of staying put it at least gives me a chance to go outside (I don't smoke in the house). My bf is a reformed smoker( the worst kind) and doesn't understand!! So you're not alone hun

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
I switched to electronic cigarettes in November, before my diagnosis. Best thing I ever did. With the electronic, you have a battery, an atomizer and a cartridge which you put flavorings into. The flavorings are made of a flavor (anything you can imagine, including all the major cig brands), plus glycerin and nicotine. You choose the nicotine level.
To "smoke", you push a button and inhale off a thing that is about the size of a pen. You are inhaling water vapor, but it feels kinda like cigarette smoke -- not exactly, but pretty close. So,you are getting nicotine and a close feel of smoking, but with no chemicals, smoke, fire, ashes, mess, smell or anything. It is not as good as not smoking at all, but is much better than smoking. It's also a bunch cheaper and you can do it inside, in an airplane bathroom, in your office, whatever.
I've been slowly stepping down my nicotine levels and I think that my next round will be half lowest level half zero nic. I feel like it has broken my habit more than anything - since I can do it wherever/whenever I want and I only need to take a single drag rather than smoke the whole cig, I'm no longer on a smoke schedule, which helps enormously to break the attachment.
I buy mine online at freedomsmokeusa . The model I got was the joye 510. You could check out e-cigarette-forum.com for more info.

@Cindi C...Thanks! Yes that is my dilema too, I can cut back a bit but not cut it out!
@tchalbeck.. My DH can quit and be done with it, no problem, but he expects me to do the same, lol he is nuts!!! We are all wired differently!

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
My Dr. didn't say anything about not smoking the day of surgery. (?)
I have a prescription for a nicotine inhaler that I think I will fill before i go in.

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
SLF_NYC great advice- I quit month prior- so a total of 8 weeks ago- the ecig is the way to go! It doesn't stink-cause cancer, and fills the void for sure! Best of luck- I've been on a road to wellness after feeling bad for years- this is just another step- now....to lose weight!

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
I am in the same dilemma. I am wondering whether to quit on the day of my pre op (5/5/11) in preparation for surgery on the 11/5/11? Or do I wait until the night before surgery and quit? I have received so many mixed messages eg: dont quit too close because the coughing is tough after surgery, quit after surgery to delay immediate coughing...and being in hospital will prevent me from being able to smoke etc etc...
I think that I will smoke until pre op appt and talk to them about it. Then again I am so stressed about this surgery and work-related matters that my ciggies are my best friends at the moment
Good Luck to you all

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
If you cannot quite before surgery, you may want to lay in some nicotine patches. You'll be uncomfortable enough after the surgery, I can't imagine dealing with the pain of quitting at the same time. Surgery is major, quitting smoking is major. Let's pick one at a time?

Re: Pre-Op tomorrow (trying to quit smoking)
I spoke with my Dr. about it. She advised me to cut back as much as possible as I have 3 weeks to go. She did say do not try and quit a day or two before as it could complictae things. She certainly was not an advocate for smoking but thought it could be worse as far as surgery goes to quit 2-3 days before surgery. Probably because of coughing and loose junk in the lungs from smoking. I really really like the idea of the vapor cigs and am going to look into it. I have quit before it's a tough a road. My husband also smokes it really is tough if it's not a joint effort.
