What's everyone eating?

I am 5 days out from my TAH and don't have much appetite. I still have gas pains and loose stool (better than constipation!) Anyway, I can get a boiled egg and english muffin down or a yogurt but I was wondering what everyone else was finding tasty and easy on the digestive system. My DH is going to make a fresh fruit salad, which sounds great but I would love some other ideas. Thanks, ladies and happy healing!

Re: What's everyone eating?

Eat as much fiber foods as possible, your body will thank you for it. Also getting enough calories helps your body heal better. If you taking any pain meds it's good to take them with a bit of food in your stomach. Now is not the time to deprive your body of food eat up and enjoy your recovery time. What a great husband you have

Re: What's everyone eating?

Try a nice veggie soup with the veggies cooked real soft. The warmth seemed to help be et things moving gently.

Re: What's everyone eating?

I'm eating almost everything. Might have oatmeal-apples & cinnamon--for breakfast tomorrow. The doc told me to eat lots of red meat for my red blood count.

Re: What's everyone eating?

Oatmeal. I have a bowl of the maple flavored oatmeal, along with a hard boiled egg in the mornings for breakfast. Lunch and dinner usually consists of salad, or chicken with a baked potato. I eat lots of fruits and drink LOTS of water.

As a result, I have no problems with BM's at all...

Re: What's everyone eating?

Sometimes it's hard to get our appetite revved back up, so eat whatever sounds appealing to you to get it back.

I've been eating eggs, tomatoes, oatmeal with extra cinnamon, grapes, strawberries, canned peaches, lettuce on sandwiches with double fiber bread, pot roast with tons of cabbage, carrots, potatoes & onions, etc. And drinking TONS of water and having a cookie or chocolate if I feel like it.

If you really hate the "taste" of water, try drinking it from a bottle or a straw or mix a little bit of juice in it - blueberry pomegranate is awesome. Any liquid without caffeine or alcohol in it will help keep you hydrated.

If I feel really sick to my stomach, I nibble on salty pretzel sticks or toast & ginger ale or Sprite/7Up. Some days I still get nauseauous even though I am now 10 days post op & not really taking a lot of pain meds.

I also find that sherbet or italian ices are easy to eat if I'm not feeling well.

Brown rice (boil in bag) is awesome with salt & butter to taste - very mild but still has some good fiber in it.

I hope this helps!

Re: What's everyone eating?

Since my hyst, DH has been making my breakfast - 1/4 cup oatmeal with 1/4 cup milk, and 1 tbs choc chip (serves as my MUFA). Then snacks would either be sugar free jello, Yoplait yogurt or I'll have fruits like mango, cantaloupe, pineapple, plums, blackberries, or banana. I am also finding that I am into antipasto salad...

Re: What's everyone eating?

I actually had some high fiber oatmeal for dinner w some trail mix heated up on it: dried cranberries, raisins, walnuts, coconut and dates. Delicious! Hit the spot. I confess I was actually craving a burger king kids meal: which I indulge in maybe twice a year. That would have been a mistake I think! I don't think of oatmeal in the summertime, that was a great idea. Tomorrow I think I will try the baked potato, and the brown rice is a great idea, too. Thanks everyone!

Re: What's everyone eating?

greek plain yogurt in morning with mixed berries (from frozen section at grocery store. I put a few packets of splenda in the fruit bag and keep in fridge so it's thawed. put about 2-3 TB over yogurt and sprinkle with fiber cereal like a fruit parfait. greek yogurt as very low sugar but very high protein - which we all need right now. not that hungry but want something i drink slim fast low carb vanilla drinks.....since i can't exercise i don't want all the extra carbs but that too has protein. easy lunch when no one's around: shrimp, mussels or piece of halibut in steamer bag in microwave. usually put a bit of marinara sauce or tomato soup and dip piece of bread in it. light and not real heavy. lots of salads. good luck - we're all in the same boat with ya!

Re: What's everyone eating?

I too didn't have much of an appetite for about the first 3 weeks after my TAH. I did find some foods easier to eat and more appetizing than others--oatmeal, applesauce (try some of the flavored ones), chicken noodle soup, yogurt, bananas, and sorbet. Hubby also Kraft mac & cheese for lunch a couple days, which was alright too because it was pretty soft. Sometimes it takes awhile to get your appetite back, and so in the meantime, if you don't feel like eating, try to at least drink water, juices, tea, or even Ensure.
