What would you do re: Atypical Hyperplasia?

I posted this over in Cancer Concerns, but I'm also looking for responses from anyone on this board who may have pertinent info as well...I just got my D&C results in....they matched an earlier endo biopsy showing complex hyperplasia w/ atypia. I'm trying Prometrium 100 mg/day, 2 wks/month for 3 months and re-biopsy in the hopes of reversing this w/o hysterectomy. Dr thinks we'll have luck reversing it, but the problem will be in keeping it reversed. From what I've heard, it's probably a long shot. I'm 45 and done w/ kids, but still hoping to change this w/o hysterectomy. We'll see. Any feedback on this method, on prometrium or anything else would be appreciated! Thank you ladies!

What would you do re: Atypical Hyperplasia?

Hi g2njl,
I'm somewhat in the same boat as you are. I have my D&C Monday morning. This is my 2nd one in 3-4 years. First time simple hyper w/o atypia, this last time simple w/atypia. I'm 50 and would really like to avoid a major surgery. Is prometrium the same as Megace? There are a few other sisters who've tried that successfully, but from what I've read they take it daily for 6-7 months. I actually have an appt. in a couple of hours with my gyn. If you look back at my posts you will see my story. I had scheduled my hysterectomy for Monday, but some other issues intervened, so now it's a D&C. My gyn is insisting on a hyster. as soon as my semester is over, but I'm going to get a second opinion from a gyn/oncologist.
One of the sisters that had success from the Megace posted on one of my threads.
I need to scoot, but am interested to see what replies you get.

Thanks to you both....good (I guess!) to be in the same boat with you. Prometrium is similar to Megace I believe...it's a progesterone, supposedly more 'natural' than Provera, which I didn't react to very well (understatement....it actually made me quite near insane!) I have had several replies along the way on the cancer concerns board that many were not diagnosed w/ cancer until after a hysterectomy, so part of me leans that way since I have quite a bit of family history with this on my mom's side. However, I just think I may be missing some success stories because if that happens, people just don't stick around on these boards, so you don't hear as much about those. Good luck on your appt today Boxerowned. Stay in touch!

What would you do re: Atypical Hyperplasia?

Hello,

Just wanted to share that I too had atypical hyperplasia-my doctor had me cycle 200 Prometrium, 16-20 days a month, for six months, then we did the exams again and everything was okay-

So the Prometrium can take care of the hyperplasia.

Hope it works for you!!

I am glad to avoid a second major surgery!!

Now I am on Prometrium continously and as long as the progesterone is keeping my estrogen in check all should be okay!
