getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I asked this 4 weeks post op. They said I would still have paps, but not annually like women who are still "intact." They said maybe every 3 years or so....I do NOT have my cervix, so not sure why, but I figure I can do it every three years! I had one at my 4 week post op appt, and lemme tell you....it hurt like HECK! Not sure if it's because of having a LAVH, stitches, etc....but first fibroids, now hyst, most of them are quite painful for me. So thankful I won't have to have it nearly as often. But am learning it depends on the doc....if it's done on occasion or not at all. I guess for those who still do it occasionally, there must be a reason?

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I asked my DR this on my last post-op visit, and she said she would not be doing PAPs on me since I no longer have a cervix, but that I still needed to come in for an annual checkup. She'll do a vaginal swab and just generally check everything. I did keep my right ovary, and I had extensive endo, so she'll keep a check on the ovary, too. I wouldn't dare not go to either a GYN or a GP for an annual exam!

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I was told at my 6 week check up that I needed to have a pap done every year for the next three years to rule out any left over cervical cells and vaginal cancer. If they come back normal each time then I can go every other year BUT I had to have a pelvic exam every year since I still have my ovaries. The pelvic exam is to hopefully catch any ovarian cancer that might rear its ugly head. She said its not fullproof but it may catch it if we're lucky. I plan to follow docs advice and have my paps each year for the next three and then every other after and my pelvic exams each year. I'd rather be safe then sorry ya know. Whats a yearly "spread and peek" in the scheme of things really.

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I have had a pap (actually a vaginal vault smear as I have no cervix) every year since my hyst. As the results have been fine each year, I can go to every other year or every third year, however, since I have my ovaries and have to have an "internal" exam to check them anyway, my dr and I decided it is only a few more minutes to do the whole exam.
Not all drs do paps after a hyst, and yes, many GPs can perform the yearly exam if you choose. As I have endo and my ovaries, I continue to use my GYN for all female related issues.

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I was told no more paps but I have to go back in 6 months for checkup. Actually, my Dr. wrote down that I am being followed up for menopause. Both ovaries removed.

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
The OB/GYN told me he wanted to do a pap each year and he will also check my one lonely ovary. I don't really mind them. Have had them for so long it doesn't really bother me.
Also I was 6 months behind my usual visit with my GP and look what happened. If he had found this fibroid earlier I might have been a candiate for LSH instead of the abdominal. I also plan on asking for an ultrasound every two years. My GP is very good about it. I've been with him for 16 yrs.

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
Soniek, I think I know the website of which you're speaking. I haven't visited it directly, but I have seen evidence of their viewpoints from another website I visit occasionally. Their views...if we are thinking of the same website...seem a bit on the radical side. I saw a post by one of the 'moderators' in which he rambled on for pages regarding how 'horrible' it was for a woman to have a hysterectomy regardless of the reason [outside diagnosis of cancer]. Anyway, this 'expert' was giving another person and all those reading his post considering hysterectomy all kinds of false information, including the fact that women who have hysterectomies will eventually just 'wither away and die,' plus the fact that they will never have any type of orgasm again. Oh, I wish I could cut and paste that. I so wish I could. I considered answering this 'expert' to inform him [funny it was a man...huh] that he didn't know his you know what from a hole in the ground, but I didn't do it. When viewpoints such as this are so radical, it is difficult to argue with people within this mindset, because they won't listen to a word anyone says, even IF you're a 'victim' of a rather horrible procedure [not my POV, that's for danged sure]. There is no way to convince these folks of anything, despite the fact that hysterectomies are necessary for a myriad of reasons. I think everyone has her doubts before and after surgery, perhaps for months afterward, but I don't think doctors are in the habit of just pointing at women and stating 'you need a hysterectomy just because I said so,' especially doctors in my area. Honestly, I needed this surgery years ago. No one would listen or even consider it until I was put through a timely, painful, and frustrating process of tests, exploratory procedures, etc.
And while I'm rambling along here, my GYN told me it would still be necessary for me to have a pap every year due to the nature of the 'thing' they removed during surgery almost a year ago. I'm not crazy about the idea and was pretty shocked when he told me I'd still need the exams. At first, I thought it was a money thing, having me coming in for an examination I didn't need just to collect hundreds of dollars from my insurance. However, after speaking to my doctor and getting further information about the tumor I so lovingly called "Thing," I understood! Okay, shutting up now.

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I definitely think that the wrong advice was given. If that question is asked and I see it I just say.....ask your doc and discuss it with them as only they and you know what is best for your body.
I personally plan to still have check-ups.....not sure how often but will discuss that with my doc at my 6 week appt.
I don't like websites like that.....think I've stumbled across a few and am glad that I didn't put much time into reading them. So glad for this one!

getting a pap AFTER a hysterectomy??
I haven't had gynecological cancers, but I do have a personal history of cancer. You can bet that I'll be camping out at my gyn's office for regular exams and paps. I don't care what the so-called "experts" say otherwise!!!
