32 yrs old Hyst or not

I have had abdominal pain for a few years now. Ultrasounds show cysts and scar tissue from previous cysts. I had my first Laparoscopy done a few days ago. My doctor said I have good news and bad news. The good news is that he did not see any endometriosis, but my uterus is enlarged, pale, and when he touched it, it turn funny colors ??? He believes it is Adenomyosis. The only treatment I can find is a Hystorectomy, but I am only 32 years old and everything I read said you should try to wait until you are 40 years old. Any advice ???

A hyst is major surgery, so you are wise to be asking questions. As for what age is "appropriate" for a hyst ... don't think there is one. Some ladies have hysts in their twenties, some are over 70! Most hysts are done for quality of life reasons (about 85%) rather than for things like cancer.

When to have a hyst really depends on your medical condition(s). From what I have read, a hyst is about the only treatment for adenomyosis. Frequently adeno can't be diagnosed until the hyst has taken place (this was true in my case ... knew I had stage 4 endo and a history of fibroids, but gyn had not suspected adeno ... it showed up on pathology report after my hyst0.

Only you and your gyn can determine if your condition has progressed to the point that you need to have a hyst now in order to improve your quality of life. Have you considered getting a second opinion? This is always a good idea when you're considering major surgery.
