Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

For sisters who lost cervix and have the vaginal cuff...

I am 13 days post op...I saw dr 2 days ago and he said to expect discharge. He said it could start any time now and go on for 6 wks.

Do we all get this? I wish I had asked him what caused it. I assume it's the vaginal cuff healing. Is this what so many sisters are unhappy about because it has an unpleasant odor?

I'm hoping I heal without having the granulation I've read about here. Did not ask the dr...started thinking about all this after the appt.

I thought I was not going to have any issues from this point on...discharge or anything. I was shocked when dr said I would (not "might" but "would").

DH said the dr talked about possible cauterizing...I don't even remember him saying this. Glad DH was there because apparently I was spaced out. I guess that's the silver nitrate business. How often do we need this?

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

I don't have answers to all your questions, but was told that spotting comes from the stitches dissolving.

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

I was told the same. Spotting is normal. I did on and off for about 5 weeks. I had to have silver nit. on two separate occassions because parts of my vaginal cuff were not healing. It seems pretty common but not everyine has to have it. Some heal properly without. I hope that helps.

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

Interesting. What started out as spotting for me day 9 is now actual bleeding day 12. I wonder if it has anything to do with this cuff?

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

Hi there, I had a yellowish waxy discharge for a good three months, on and off. Never had blood, but some do. I think you should call your doctor if you are bleeding, and just check to see if everything is ok.

The stitches dissolve sometimes before the cuff is fully healed. If that is the case there can be spotting. The stitches dissolving are also the reason for the odor.

Here's a post-op article on it.

If you are soaking a pad an hour that is definitely time to call the Dr. Or go to the ER. Some spotting is not unusual but not all people have it, or does everyone need silver nitrate.

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

I am almost 7 weeks and have had no discharge or spotting at all...
I know there are others that have had no spotting like me.
I was cleared for baths at 2 weeks and that may have helped.

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

I didn't have any problems. I had slight spotting for a couple of days at 3 weeks post op....that's it. No foul smells and did not need silver nitrate. Was all healed at my 6 week check up. I think this is probably more of the norm so you might not have any issues either. Best wishes!!!

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

I had no spotting - nothing after the 1st day post-op. and I'm past 3 months now!

Never had any smelly discharge, never saw any stitches appearing!

6 week check-up had internal exam. Cuff wound pronounced "perfectly healed"

I wish you the same good fortune!

It MAY depend on whether you had robotic surgery or manual surgery how well things go in general. It's easier to do a good sewing job by hand! (I'm told)
(But that means, of course, a large incision - which I've got)

Re: Question for sisters with vaginal cuff

Hi, my vaginal cuff healed very well. At 8 weeks doctor checked me. He found no granulation or scar tissue and released me for regular activites. I think silver nitrate is only used if you have scar tissue or granulation. Most of us don't need it. I had some discharge and spotting after surgery. It disnt last long and wasn't heavy enough to even use a pantyliners. It was just there when I wiped. I had the different odor as my stitches dissolved but I wasn't a bad odor. I never saw any of my stitches come out.
