Upcoming hysterectomy: Pedunculated fibroid

Anyone else had this issue?

TAH scheduled for Nov 7th. First ultrasound done Sep 12, showed no pedunculated fibroid, even though I could feel it. Fibroid appeared to be moving. Ended up slipping through the cervix in late September and moved through the vagina over a period of a week until I could feel the fibroid jutting out of the vaginal entrance. For 2 following week I bled super heavy and had to clean around the fibroid tissue every time I urinated. Second ultrasound at an ultrasound clinic especially for women, showed huge pedunculated fibroid blocking the cervix. I could still feel it in the vaginal cavity, but technition couldn't sight it with internal ultrasound. Both Dr and GYN were able to visually see it and feel it. Ultrasound tech stated that she had never seen such a long stalk on a peduncutaed fibroid. Lucky no actual pain, just discomfort. Three days ago , after over a month of discomfort, pedunculated fibroid seems to have moved back into the uterus and out of the vaginal cavity. Did not feel round, more like a tube .

At 48 and already in peri menopause I have decided I need to have it removed

Re: Pedunculated fibroid

Fibroids certainly can be a pain. And when they do this kind of stuff it's even worse.
I also was unfortunate enough to have a pedunculated fibroid. It did exactly what yours did. My surgeon took me to the OR and tried to remove but was concerned about bleeding. So he called my husband from the OR and asked permission to perform a hysterectomy. Thankfully he was smart enough to ask and my husband was smart enough to ask if he liked breathing. So no hysterectomy for me that day.
So it was decided that UFE and then a hysterectomy was the way to proceed. But I said no at the very last minute and opted to do UFE and a vaginal myomectomy. My surgeon was very respectful and supportive of my decision.
It's been over a year now. No more fibroids and no hysterectomy was necessary. I was in perimenopause as well and my periods come every once in a while. They are light enough for a panty liner and are barely noticeable.
Although the experience was a little scary I'm very pleased to be rid of the fibroid and not have had an unnecessary major surgery.

Re: Pedunculated fibroid

I had a large (like small watermelon size) fibroid, not sure if it was pendunculated or not. Unlike yours mine was actually growing on the outside of my uterus, in the abdominal cavity. Because of the size and it being in my abdominal cavity, UFE wasn't a good option for me, too much risk of abdominal infection as the fibroid died and honestly I just wasn't too keen on having a dying mass floating around in my abdomen. I am not yet peri-menopausal but am in my mid 40's and not trying to preserve fertility so I decided on a hysterectomy. It is hard to know the right way to go sometimes. Everyone's situation is different. I put my surgery off long enough that the fibroid grew to the point a laproscopic procedure was no longer an option, but at least that extra time allowed me to research options, get second and third opinions and become comfortable with my choice.
