Surgery will be soon!

Hi, I am new here. I am trying to find some support from ppl in the same situation. It of course, is all very frightening and alot to "digest" as well. I am currently awaiting my surgery date. My Doctor said it will be within the next 2 weeks. There is so much to prepare for, I have 2 children, a home, a job, I go to school 4 nights a week. I have to prepare everything now, so everyone will be taken care of when I have to go to the hospital. Thanks for any advice, words of support in advance. I look forward to hearing from Sisters that have been through this already. Thanx again!

Surgery will be soon!

I am schedled for an LSH in a week. I am a teacher so I have been trying to get lesson plans done for school, plus I have a daughter and multiple pets.

First, enlist a small group (friends, family, coworkers etc) that are willing to assist you both before and after surgery. Do you have someone who can help you care for your kids? Do you need to get certain things in place at work? Talk to your professors and let them know what is going on...maybe you can submit assignments late or via email? Make yourself a prioritized list of what needs to be done before your surgery. Delegate chores where ever possible. Don't sweat the small stuff...if the toilet doesn't get cleaned for a few weeks or the floor doesn't get swept, big deal...everyone will survive. Ensure that your children and pets will be cared for and try not to worry.

Surgery will be soon!

kgc, thank you for your reply. I am hoping I can get my sister to come out & help for a lil' bit(no guarantees there tho) my job knows what's going on & supports me. My schooling, I have already been in touch with the President & they are on board to help me make up the missed time & work. This is a Career Center so there is no e-mail involved. I've already stopped sweating the smalll stuff (the house) since I was hospitalized in July(just in too much pain). I am just really worried about the aftermath of the surgery.

Surgery will be soon!

It actually helped me to have a lot to do before my surgery because it kept my mind off of it. I don't know what kind of hysterectomy you are having, so I am not sure about the aftermath. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and the recovery for that type is usually longer than a laparoscopic or vaginal surgery, although everyone recovers differently. I know that I worried before the surgery much more than I should have. It was not nearly as bad as I expected. I have heard many women on this board say that they felt better right after their surgery than they did before it because they has suffered so much pain leading up to it. You definitely need to rest and allow yourself time to heal. You will have restrictions such as no lifting, etc., so if your sis can come, I am sure she will be a big help to you. I wish you an easy surgery and a speedy recovery. Now that I am on the other side, I can definitely say that it was all worth it.

Surgery will be soon!

My surgery is on October 15. I'm having a total abdominal. It is really scary - I just went to the ob/gyn for a couple of 3 month long periods and ended up having a biopsy that found precancerous cells. I was just figuring on a D & C but not that lucky.

Surgery will be soon!

As Kelly posted, everyone recovers differently. Mine was done vaginally, and I can honestly say I experienced no pain (kept up with meds) and had less discomfort than when recovering from vag births. I was up and about within a week; allowed to climb stairs that first day. But please, don't rush it! It's true you only have one chance to heal right. I'm only telling about my experience to say it wasn't nearly as bad as I had feared. And now I am so grateful not to have to deal with those horrible heavy periods!
Best of luck!

Surgery will be soon!

Allison, thank you for your reply. I am happy to read that your recovery went better than you had anticipated. I am trying to not worry myself about the "what if's" and how am I going to. I am just trying to let everything go as it is planned. I have been scheduled for this coming Friday. I am having abdominal hyster, he is taking my uterus, ovaries & cervix. I will be grateful not to have to have this horrible pain every month as well. Thank you again. Encouragement comes from those that go thru it before us. Thank you for sharing.
