Supracervical hysterectomy

Hi everyone!!! I just had my 6-week examine and visit with my wonderful gyn and I told him about the problems some of the post-op women were having. He suggested I write in about the Supracervical hysterectomy option. If you have always had good pap smears and your ovaries always check out fine, you might want to opt for this procedure. Only the uterus is removed and everything else stays intact. You keep the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix. I had a cantaloupe-size uterus full of fibroids and had heavy bleeding for almost 2 years! The last 6 months before the surgery, I had pretty much one solid period, kept slightly under control with birth control pills. Towards the end, I had to double the dose and still passed very large clots. I'm feeling really good now. My doctor said I should be as good as new at 3 months. Just wanted to pass along this option for those of you who are still researching what is best. Try reading about it on the Internet as well. My best to everyone...

Supracervical hysterectomy

Yes supracervical may be an option for some however each dr. has different skills. Here is are a couple of links about keeping or losing the cervix. Some women that keep the cervix and at least one ovary can end up with mini-periods every month. Sometimes dr's do something special during surgery to prevent periods but others have had continued periods and some dr's don't even warn the patients about these.
Here are a few links about the cervix.

There are some that have been diagnosed with either adenomyosis or endometriosis that may have an increased chance for mini-periods because both adeno and endo can extend down into the cervix causing either bleeding, cramps, or both.
Web link that explains this. http://www.cmj.org/2wl/zhangxinmei2.htm
Found in the link.
"Yet, the pathological change of adenomyosis is often diffuse[1] and even extends to uterine cervix."

No more periods? Yea right!

Also remember that even if you have the cervix removed, it is still advisable to continue to get yearly paps to rule out the possiblity of vaginal cancer.
Paps still needed, death hit close to home.
