Dear Heather,

Best wishes for surgery on Tuesday. I had a laparotomy ten days ago, south of the border in the British midlands, for the removal of a 12.6 cm cyst on my left ovary. (The ovary and fallopian tube went too.) I was told I had a 25% to 30% chance of it being cancer and now I am waiting for the histology results. (The surgeon took omental and para / aortic biopsies.) So I have been where you are very recently and my sympathies are very much with you.

Assuming the NHS system is broadly the same in Scotland, do please feel free to ask me anything about my experience. I was intrigued by how different our system is than the American system, for example. (Best of all, no "bowel prep"!)

Are you being operated on by a gynaecological oncologist? They are the best if cancer is even suspected.

Hi, Heather. I'm so glad you let us know what's going on with you. I will remember you on Tuesday and keep you in my prayers.

I had a 10.5 centimeter mass on my right ovary (lots of other stuff going on elsewhere, too). I had the same surgery and I feel better just knowing it's all out of me! I want to tell you that I'm just past the 3 week mark post-op and I've really noticed a change in how I'm feeling. I can do so much more this week versus last week (although, of course, I'm trying to be good and not overdo it). I'm nowhere near "peak", but it does get better - a day at a time.

I'm looking forward to being able to drive soon. Yeah!!! Freedom once again.

God Bless and let us know how you're doing when you get back home.

Dear Heather,

I will definitely be thinking of you and praying for you on Tuesday, and in the days leading up to your surgery as well. I hope hope hope that your mass is benign. But if it isn't, you will find tremendous support from the kind women on this board. I don't know how I would be faring if it wasn't for all the love, support and incredibly helpful real-world advice I've received here.

Edinburgh is such a lovely place! People on this board often refer to going to the hospital as "going to the castle," but you and Maggie E are probably the only people on this board who have a daily view of a real castle. :-)

I wish you the very best of luck with your surgery! s!

ovarian mass

Hey Heather

I turned over on my stomach one day and felt like a ball and I knew something was there. Right after that had a lot of pelvic pain and pressure but was having my last period. As soon as period was over I went to dr. I called first but couldn't get anywhere on the phone so I just went. Dr thought it was a fibroid, had an ultra sound next day, my right ovary was huge, I had a tah/bso 2 days later because this thing was not there in Nov when I had a very good checkup. This actually blew my mind. I asked the dr what she thought about it being cancer and she said she was taking some extra precautions just in case. She was going to check lymph nodes if it appeared to be cancer at that time. It didn't check out to be cancer. It was 16 x 15 x 9 cm. However, at 1 week check up she told me that it was sent off and showed that it was just beginning to turn into ovarian cancer. Thank God it is gone and they took everything. At my 5 week checkup last week I asked my dr if i had to worry about cancer anymore and she said she will have to keep a very close eye on me. I am so blessed that I do not have to have any treatments. This stuff is very scary. I will pray for you and wish you all the best. I'll be looking forward to hearing how it goes. God Bless You
