what can I have on a clear liquid diet?

I had my pre-op yesterday and now I have to do a clear liquid diet all day Tuesday, day before my surgery.
My question is this....

What exactly can I have that day? Only clear broth and clear juice?

Thanks for the info

what can I have on a clear liquid diet?

If you call and ask for specifics the nurse will rattle off a list for you. Mine was good to tell me what to avoid, also (The things you'd think were clear liquids that really are not.)

I would not recommend *eating* anything but plain jello. If your DR said clear liquids, that's what you should do. Everyone's instructions are personalized for them by their DR.

Don't drink vegetable juices, they are not "clear" liquids.

roscoe has given you a pretty good list.

cranberry juice, grape juice, are also clear liquids, in addition to that, 7-up is too!

what can I have on a clear liquid diet?

Hi DSK - My dr's instructions for a clear liquid diet are:

strained soup broth - no noodles, etc.
jello (any flavor)
fruit juice with no pulp
sherbet (no ice cream because it contains milk)
clear soda (7-Up, etc)

I had to stick to this diet the day I did the bowel prep in preparation for my surgery the following day, which was then postponed - now I have to do it all over again!!!! Good luck to you!

what can I have on a clear liquid diet?

According to what is usually considered clear liquids by hospitals, nurses, and doctors it does not include sherbert (can you see through that?). It does include popsicles.

It does not include coke but 7 up or sprite or ginger ale is ok. Tea, some places include coffee but better off sticking to tea.

Broth is ok (must be just the broth, don't try straining soup you could get more than you should on this diet and would hate to see someone trying to strain a cream soup and think that is ok).

Fruit juice as long as it has no pulp is not ok...this would include some types of orange juices now. Apple, Cranberry, cranapple, cranraspberry, grape (white would be best) juices are ok. Any of the flavored sparkling waters should be ok too.

Any flavor plain jello.

You can get pretty full on this in good amounts. Doesn't keep you full though so you may want to have a late snack of it also.

I am sorry you have to do this the day before. Unless there may be some bowel surgery as a possibility, most hospitals are now saying that you can have a regular meal the day before and then a clear liquid meal 8-10 ours preop then nothing to eat. I think some of the new antinausea meds are so efficient that they are able to do this more for us now. Unfortunately most of the doctors have not caught up with what the anesthesiologists have found out.
