Should I keep remaining ovary?

Hi all,

First time posting here. I am 37 and will be having LAVH on June 23rd. It is up to me to decide if I want to keep my one remaining ovary. I had RSO as well as other things done on March 24th of this year.
I never really had too many problems with the left ovary. I do however have bad migraine headaches associated with ovulation and periods. I was told by my gyn that if I were to have it removed and go on ERT, that because my hormone levels will stay the same and not fluctuate (SP) that I will most likely not have the headaches. On the other hand, I was also told that I still may have several years left before natural menopause.
My mom had radical mastectomies at the age of 36. I am worried about the risks of HRT. I am leaning towards just keeping the ovary but would love to here from ladies who have been in my shoes.

Thanks in advance!
Blessings,
Sherri

Should I keep remaining ovary?

Hi Sheri

This is a difficult decision to make. I had both my ovaries removed, but I was 49 when I had my LAVH/BSO last year and was already in peri-menopause. For me, it was the right decision and I am doing well on HRT--

My thinking is if your ovary is healthy, and you are only 37, it may be a good idea to leave it , as it may continue to give you hormonal support into your 40's.

You may want to do a search here on this subject. Go to search button and click and type in "keep ovaries"--you will see a lot of past discussion about this issue.

Best wishes to you in making the decision that is right for you.
