A new hyster-sister :o)

Hello ladies

I am Adi and I am an endometriosis sufferer who is due for a hysterectomy with ovaries out.

I am currently on provera 10mg 3 times daily to stop my periods since November 2002.

My periods were so painful that I had rectal and vaginal spasms (sorry for the graphics)

I have been told that as I will not take any more hormone treatment I will have to have a hyst.

I will have both ovaries out too. They want me to go on a drug called Zoladex to shut me down completely and simulate no womb and ovaries. From the feedback on the endo site that I use everyday........... I am horrified at the serious side effects that those taking this injection suffer.

Any advice, guidance, past experiences shared would be gratefully accepted.

This looks like a wickedly informed site..... I am sooo glad one of my endo sisters recommended it to me.

Hope to get to know you all very soon.

All my love and respect, and hopefully someday support!!!!!!!!

Adi

A new hyster-sister :o)

Hi Adi.

Luckily, am one who did not have endo. Seems like a real bear to me. But did have 5-15 surgery, for very enlarged uterus, and since am nearly 48, ovaries are cancer magnets, so I told them they could have those old ovaries, too.

If the side effects of a medication are really bad, and there are other alternatives you could discuss further with your doc, or have second opinion. Just a suggestion. I too have seen the meds for your condition are a bear, but maybe not for you - until you get there you might not know.

Good luck...am glad you found this site. It truly is a great place.

zoladex

Hiya
I too have endo...well no, sorry, I HAD endo...before i had my TAH six weeks ago. I'm 31 and have had endo since i first started my periods at 9.
I've had a lot of treatment, and 14 operations, all for endo. One of the treatments i've had has been zoladex. I've also been on Provera too.

I first went on to Zoladex and tolerated it very well. I would recommend it, but ONLY with good guidance from a gyanecologist who is experienced with working with this drug.

It doesn't particularly hurt to have the injection - it stings a bit, and is uncomfortable, but not unbearable. And the side effects the first time around for me were minimal. I got some hot flushes, but nothing too horrendous.

However the second i took Zoladex was last year. As part of a drug trial with Add-back treatment of HRT. They gave me zoladex every three months instead of every month. Some of the women in the trial had HRT from day one, but others didn't get it until six months into the trial.
Basically the trial was to see whether women should be given HRT from the beginning of zoladex treatment and not wait.
I had three bone scans and it didn't really affect me that greatly.

But I did get horrendous one in a million side effects. My hands and joints swelled terribly and i had to have 12 weeks off from work. I was extremely unlucky (as i feel like i have been all the way through with my endo treatment) as zoladex is usually a drug which i understand is well tolerated.

For me, the first time, it worked very well. It stopped my periods and thus all of the endo pain.

I would talk over my options with my gynaecologist and GP if I were you. Remember you don't have to take or do anything with which you are uncomfortable.

I hope this helps. But please, get professional advice.
