What about an IUD that's still in place?

My GYN is recommending a hysterectomy based on 1) Fibroids large enough to put alot of pressure on my bladder, and 2) My IUD is caught up in a fibroid and has been carried off to parts unknown.

My understanding is that hyster. surgery would occur with the IUD in place and everything would be removed at once. Has anyone else had this kind of situation? And was the removal of the ute, etc. done abdominally or vaginally? I'm planning on keeping my ovaries and possibly my cervix.

I've got lots of questions for her (the Dr.), but I thought I'd poll the Sisters for some of you with this kind of thing.

(((((Swazzle)))))),

If you want to keep your cervix you ahve to have your surgery abdominally.

I imagine anything in the uterus will be examined and tossed also.

Best wishes,

I'd see what your dr. has to say about removal of the uterus. There are about five ways a hysterectomy can be performed. Ladies who keep the cervix and at least one ovary can have experience mini-periods because the cervix can still contain linin that can shed every month. Sometimes it's just spotting while others have had to go back in and have the cervix removed because of heavy bleeding. Cervix can be kept during an SAH (open abdominal incision) or LSH (laproscopic). Also depending on the size and location of fibroids will depend on what surgical approach your dr. takes. Good luck.
