Mirena

Hello ladies

My Dr has suggested Mirena IUS for heavy bleeding and to get some more progesterone into me. has anyone had any success with this? (Probably not given the title of this site, but you never know!)

Many thanks

Not Mirena but progestin experience

Hi Aussieone, I'm an Aussie too and although I didn't actually have Mirena inserted I was on a heavy dose of provera (which is a synthetic form of progesterone) to control bleeding and I did stop bleeding taking the maximum dose combined with Microgynon 50 (birth control pills), not having a period at all for 6 weeks (normally I would have had at least 3 very heavy ones with spotting in between) while I tried to build up my blood count for surgery. A few days after I stopped taking I started losing blood again. When provera was first prescribed I took a smaller dose that caused me to bleed constantly with haemmorrhaging occuring monthly so it does tend to require different doses for different people.

Hopefully mirena will work for you - if you're not destined for surgery at this point then anything's worth a try.

Mirena

Hi Aussieone

I found this old post when I was having a look around the site - I'm probably too late because a month has passed and you may already have made a decision. But anyway...

I had a Mirena inserted back in March or April, to treat dysfunctional bleeding, and it was in there for about three months. It's not a long trial, I admit, but for the time that I had it my periods seemed to be a lot better, and some of the other symptoms of excess oestrogen seemed to improve as well. I had light bleeding for a couple of weeks after it was inserted (I was told that would happen), and my periods kept coming at the regular time, but they were MUCH more manageable.

From that short experience I would have been happy to continue with the Mirena for years. But unfortunately, the D&C they did at the time it was inserted showed that I was developing a severe pre-cancerous condition as well, so out came uterus and Mirena and all!

What part of Australia do you come from, by the way? Just wondering.
