How long will it really take to get back to normal?

I have finally scheduled my TVH for August 14. I've known that it was coming for 12 years - but now find that it is finally time. I've got almost a 3rd degree uterine prolapse. The doctor is also going to pull out the ovaries if they come easily. I've been through more than my share in those years - recovery from a double mastectomy, and an assortment of other little surgeries and the loss of my son. My doctor didn't think there was a rush. I'm not in the least scared of what will be happening - just anxious for it to be over. I'll be in the hospital several days - and know that I will receive superb care there. My doctor says it will be about a 2 week recovery. My DH, DS and DIL will be here to keep the household moving - with little help from me.

My question is how long it really will be until I have my strength back? How long before I can go back to my daily 3 mile walks? How long before I can work on regrading my back yard with a new drainage ditch?

Hi Joyce,

The initial recovery from a TVH is four to six weeks, with full recovery taking anywhere from 6 months to a year.

While everyone heals at different paces, you should really try to take it easy during that initial period of time, as any damage done to your body during that time can cause complications which can sometimes take weeks, months, or even years to manifest.

Walking is one of the best things you can do post-op, but you'll want to start out slowly and only walk 1/2 as far as you feel that you can manage (since you still have to turn around and come back! ) As for digging ditches, that is such streneous work that you'd need to wait at least a couple of months before tackling that one.

One important thing to remember is that you only get one chance to heal properly, and if you overdo it too soon, you can't go back and undo the damage. So plan on being a good for a couple of months, and you'll be back to normal and feeling great before you know it.

Best wishes and s,

Lisa
