any special items you wish you had?

Hello
I found when I went to the castle I was glad that I had my small pad and a pen close by my bed, as I thought of a question during the day or night for my dr I would write it down, because half the time when he would come in I would be dozing. So I would patially wake up grab my pad and ask my questions that way after he left I didn't have to say I wanted to ask him and I forgot!!
Came in handy for me.

any special items you wish you had?

Hi! I wish I'd had a phone card. It was the only way to call out of the hospital that I was in. My husband works the afternoon shift and would come see me in the morning. There were a couple times at night that I would have liked to just call him and say hi. Or call one of my kids. Make sure you take lip balm. It was a life saver for me.

Things to Bring

I enjoyed my favorite scented lotion for arms and legs and feet. And shower gel for that first shower, which is a religious experience. I too brought some chap stick. Keeps lips moist. Magazines that you can read between naps when nothing is on tv. Slippers with no backs so you can stick your feet in them without bending over. Bring soft stretchie clothes to wear home, if you don't want to go home in pj's and a robe.

Hope this helps.

Lip Balm was a life saver for me also... I could have used some mints. The one thing I really wished I could have had was a personal fan- the kind that clips on the side of something. It was really humid in my room- so on top of not showering for a day, I felt yucky from the humidity.

thank you all for getting back to me. great ideas!!! i'm so nervous using this computer, i just realized that it's a castle, not a palace that i'm going to - lol, but i still will be a princess. i am quite nervous since i was told that there was a 6 mon. to 1 year waiting period but i got 1 mon. notice but thanks to reading your site maybe sooner is better. thanks again for the advice, the more i use this computer the less time i have to stress-ha ha!!

I would agree with the chap stick. It was a big help especially the day after surgery. I was glad that I had taken the following things with me:

my own robe and two soft night gowns
two pairs of my own loose fitting underwear
several pads and pantiliners from home (only used pads in the castle)
slippers
magazine (something with short articles that don't require too much reasoning power - the pain meds have an amazing numbing affect on the brain)
portable CD player with ear buds and a favorite quiet CD (helps to block out hospital noise and provides comfort)
own shampoo, face soap, moisturizer, and chap stick
a small trinket that reminds you of your special someone (I was surprised how much I apprecated this one - I took a small magnetic eyore that my DH had bought me)

Good Luck and God bless. I am 12 days PO and feel better than I have in a long time.

I brought some stuff that I did not even use but the few things I did and was glad I brought were mints, slippers, pjs and pads. Lord the pads they give you at the hospital are the size of a canoe!!
Good Luck with your surgery!

My tips

Hi, had TAH last Friday and these things have been helpful.
First, just wear to the hospital what you plan on going home in. I wore some nylon ELASTIC waist athletic shorts and a t-shirt. (Have hubby hang it in your castle room for departure)
Second, the Boppy pillow which is used for breast feeding moms is great to protect your incision.
Third, I got home and realized that it would be awful CLIMBING into my high bed with the tall mattress!! My neighbor had brought over her exercise step and placed it so I could just step up into bed. It REALLY helped a lot!!
Fourth, I brought my favorite flavor of hot tea and drank a ton of it to get things going.
Fifth, Go ahead and buy some thank you notes and stamps, if you have coherent moments you can thank people who do nice things for you!!
Good Luck, six days post surgery and I feel much better. Just let everyone take care of you and do nothing!!
