HRT?

Did your Dr put you on any HRT in the hospital, or send you home with any? And, did you have your ovaries removed?

I am 34 and had a TAH BSO 10 months ago. My Dr said due to my age, he placed a patch on me during my recovery immediately following the surgery so I wouldn't have any dip in my hormone activity. Then, once I was at home, I started Estratest FS...stayed on it for 8 months, and now I've been on Femring for the last 2+ months. But, I had my ovaries removed...that makes a big difference in what the Dr's will prescribe.

yes I had both ovaries removed and he didn't place me on anything in the hospital because he was concerned about blood clots. since yours sounds a lot like mine I would also ask you about pain I am pretty pain tolerant becuase I also have fibromyalgia but they gave me vicodins and I am still at about a 7 on the pain scale is this normal?

Shelli,
Have you previously had problems with blood clots? Or do they run in your family? The reason I ask is because if you do, you probably will not be able to take hrt.

Doctors do seem to differ on when to start hrt. Some will start you on it immediately, others will wait. There really isn't a wrong or a right way. Our bodies do have stored reserves of hormones and it can take awhile before those stores are used up.

Everyones pain level is different. If you are still uncomfortable you should definetly give your a call.

Hi,
I'm concerned too with blood clots. I know I have high factor VIII (clotting factor in blood) and was on lots of injected heparin post op. But my MD wants to use low dose estrogen anyway. Think I will speak to my hematologist before filling any RX.
I know I had a shot of estratest post op recovery due to severve hormone withdrawls.
Any ideas on testosterone w/o estrogen? I know I feel the effects of it post-op and it feels great.

Hi Shelli,
I am 5 weeks post-op tomorrow from the same surgery TAH/BSO. I too was not given any hormones at first because of my endo. So I know exactly what you are going thru. My dr did finally put me on Cenestin after 4 weeks. I don't know much about hormones and the blood clots but I would call your dr and see if there is something he/she can do to help you. Don't be afraid to call your dr, that is what he/she gets paid for. Maybe you could ask your dr about the natural supplements that are on the market like Black Cohosh, maybe that would work for you since you have to worry about blood clots. Just hang in there, everyday seems to get a bit better.

Shelli -

I think the "don't put them on hormones vs leg clots right after surgery" is just a medical "standard" out there. Some docs pay attention to it some don't. Mine said that too, and I said, "Well, you aren't the one who is going to suffer the hot flashes, I'll take my chances..." and he said, "No problem...it is just some study out there.." And then he wrote the prescription as I lay in my hospital bed, and my dh filled it that night.

Going through all that surgery is one thing, and THEN having to go suffer through hot flashes and crying once I got home??? Not.
