Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

Sorry to be posting on the Post-Op side when I am still preop, but I am hoping someone post-op can explain if this type of gas pain (if that's what it is) sounds familiar.

I woke up this morning (4:30 am) with what felt like cramps coming on. But they built up and built up to the point that I almost had hubby take me to emergency. Felt like my uterus and fallopian tubes were just throbbing and wanting to come out of my body (uterus is about 2 weeks shy of getting its wish).

I am not having my hyst because of pain, but I have never experienced this type of pain before. If I was to guess (since I haven't had children), I'd say it would be like what I would expect a really long contraction to be.

The pain lasted about 1/2 an hour with me virtually in tears and slowly (sorry to be gross), when I was able to move my bowels, the pain started to subside. It feels just like really bad cramps, which I have never really had in my life.

I had a cone biopsy under general anesthesia 3 1/2 weeks ago and several bowel issues since. But could this still be an issue so much later? And this didn't feel like bowel discomfort ... it felt like my female parts.

Going to call doc's office shortly and see what they say. Embarrassed if all I'm experiencing is gas, but worried that it might be more. (I did have unexpected menstrual-type cramping for the last couple of days ... have no idea why.)

Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

I know that when I have intestinal gas (because of various foods/drinks) it feels worse than cramps. I've always had problems with this so I try to be careful as to what I eat & do somethimes.

3 weeks after surgery I ate something that had a cream sauce & my lactose intolance flared up - major intestinal cramping for 6 hours! When I went to the bathroom & had major BM I felt so much better.

Do check with your doctor - it's better to know what it is.

Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

Hi Janet,

I'm sorry that you're experiencing this. It can be so frightening when something painful like this happens and we don't know what's going on.

I've had gas pains that were severe enough that I actually thought I was having a heart attack...severe chest pain and difficulty breathing . BUT, I experienced this after my hyst and it was just gas, thank goodness!

However, I have never experienced anything like that at any other time. I think you were wise to contact your Dr. because I think it might be something else since you have never had this problem before and haven't had your surgery yet.

Let us know what your Dr. says and how you are, ok?

Best wishes and s

Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

Janet,

You didn't say whether you were having your period or not or if you were getting ready to have it. Before my hyst when I was on the first or second day of my period I would have gas pains that were extremely sharp and painful. I could actually feel them moving down my intestines and it was relieved when I would pass it. Sometimes it would double me over for a few minutes.

I think it was endo flaring up around my bowels and was irritated by the gas.

I don't know if it's the same thing you experienced, but I thought I'd let you know what happened to me. I'll be wondering what your doctor says about it.

Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

the gas pain i have had have been MUCH more severe than menstrual cramps. it feels like red hot swords being stabbed through my guts. i literally doubled over, and the first few times i cried, it was so pain ful. now i just gasp and double over.

thankfully the gas attacks are diminishing in frequency. i still get about 2-3 a day

Can really bad gas pains feel like really awful menstrual cramps?

I am glad I am not alone in this. I am 8 weeks post op and still have not resumed normal BM. The gas pains the first few days after my TVH were horrible, I was doubled over much of the time.

Before I would have had my morning cup of coffee or tea and a few minutes later strolled to the rest room. Now the "urge" hits as I am driving to work and I run to the rest room the minute I get there. The TVH was fine, no problems but the gas and irregularity have been my new cross to bear. Today is my day off and I took some fiber capsules last night in hopes of having a very productive morning, now I am constipated. About a year ago I had hydrocolon therapy while staying at a spa, it was bizarre but really got my system cleaned out and up and running quite well, I might think about doing that again if I could find someone locally.

Sorry this is gross but at least I am in understanding company.

Best wishes to all my pre- and post- op sisters. I am truly a happy new WOMAN.

UPDATE to yesterday's pains

After going to the doctor, she determined that I have a raging bladder infection. Yes, it felt like cramps due to the fact that the bladder sits in nearly the same place (found that out with internal exam). I realized that my cranberry juice cravings over the last couple of weeks were actually masking the other symptoms of a bladder infection (frequent and/or painful urination).

Please talk to your doctors if you are having pains that cause you to double over and make sure they are just gas ... mine weren't!

(No, I haven't had my surgery yet, but I can see how this could have easily been confused for other pain related to hysterectomy.)
