Fleet Enema & Betadine Douche

Hey Ladies,

My castle date is Monday, October 20th and my doctor ordered a Fleet enema and a Betadine douche, but he ordered them for the hospital. The hospital just called to schedule my pre-op visit with them for tomorrow and the nurse I talked to said, "most doctors let their patients do these at home". She did say they will just hand them to me and let me do it myself - thank God! Has anyone else had a doctor that wanted it done in the hospital? I called my doctor and he was very firm on this and said that he has had a couple of people in the past that did NOT do it and it was problematic, so hence his rule.

I plan to spend my last weekend cleaning house, doing laundry, grocery shopping, etc. That "nesting" urge is pretty comical, if you ask me! Why do we always feel the need to get everything just "perfect" before anything BIG? My poor hubby just delivered a beautiful plant to my office and told me, "breathe in - breathe out ... everything will be fine ...". I, of course, think I am fine and showing zero signs of stress or nervousness ... he told me I am starting to flip out ... hmmm! Oh well ... just a few more days to go and this will all be behind me!

Thanks,

Debi

AH...you have a "tidy" doctor...doesn't like mess on the OR tables!

I see it this way:

How is HE going to KNOW if you do it in home bath the morning OF surgery day or in the hospital bath the morning OF surgery?

I am not advocating NOT following doctor's orders, but his assumption that all patients are fools because one or two patient's are fools is a bit anal..

If you will forgive the pun! Not intended! LOL

DEBBIE
I am also scheduled for Monday the 20th....(5 daysONLY!!)
Good Luck to you w/everything and hope all goes well.

I am not excited either about the "Fleet" except mine seems to be the "oral" stuff that tastes like "CR*P...pardon the pun, but I'd rather have that than the other END>>>

Take care & God Bless

HI Debi,
I did my pre-op bowel stuff in the hospital too - on my own - which I greatly appreciated.
1. it was really at the last moment
2. it was very private
3. there was a "professional" someone to call on if I had trouble.

and the cleaning thing... well.... let's just say that is one of the phases I *didn't* go through before surgery!!

Please don't worry about the enema, - it really isn't that big a deal compared to everything else.

best wishes,

Hi!
Your question got me to wondering... My surgery is the 27th and not a peep from my MD or the nurses about a enema of any kind, so, I picked up the phone and called the nurse. She said "No, you don't need it, we don't do that anymore" !!!???!!! I guess each MD does things differently...... I'm having a TAH/BSO so one would think they would need all the room they could get in there???

Anybody out there that has a MD with the same pattern of thought?

Hi

In the olden days, before they had to try to save money wherever possible, patients checked in to the hospital the night before their surgery, and all this pre op stuff was done in the hospital. The enemas, the special diets, anything your DR has you do before you show up the morning of surgery, was all done for you (or to you).

It is more cost effective not to have the patient in the hospital in advance if they can do this for themselves.

They know exactly what you do in the hospital - you don't flush the toilet without permission.

The bottom line is: follow your DR's instructions. Failing to can cause cancellation or postponement of your surgery.

I asked my Doctor while booking my Pre-Op appointment. She said NO enema but Id have to drink something after my last meal the day before to clean myself out.

It all depends on the type of procedure you have and the doctors own personal preferences.

Its a good idea to be squeeky clean ...heh....not only for the obvious reasons DURING surgery but I read that when your body resumes its normal functions afterwards that its much less painful and easier to function with nothing in your system. Its much more difficult to start up and push existing "stuff" out than it is to gradually take in and process new excrement.

I hope I said this in an understandable and not so gross way.

I plan on eating very lightly my last couple days....mostly liquid diet like soup.....to help insure my system is clear. Im going to drink that ~internal cleansing beverino~ with a smile as directed...LOL. And then I plan on drinking lots of fluids afterwards to help prevent the constipation that Im reading so much about.

This board offers so much info and good clues to prevent any discomforts.....Imma be doin every last one of them.
