can I get pregnant 1 mth prior to surgery?

I sound like a 12 year old girl.... but, I stopped my BCP last week, as per doc, because my surgery is in 4 weeks. This weekend was my first time having intercourse without being on the pill. It never occurred to me to think I might get pregnant until my partner asked me if it was a possibility.

I have been on the pill for 19 years because of heavy bleeding and extreme pain. I have multiple large fibroids and enlarged uterus. The uterus has been completely taken over by the fibroids - no room for anything else! However, can I still get pregnant?

I always thought getting pregnant was near impossible due my situation, but now I'm worried. I don't want my surgery post-poned. Is that crazy? I've been so worried that I haven't been able to have any orgasms at all this weekend. I don't know if it's due to stopping the pill, therefore changing the levels of hormones, or me being worried. The libido is fine, all works well, but can't get to that final coveted destination! I was fine until last week. Any thoughts?

I don't want to go through this if I'm to lose my sex life.....

Thanks for all your support.

I would talk to you doctor immediately about this. As in any situation, if you are off the pill or any other form of B/C, you could be susceptible. Chances are probably slimmer, as the b/c is probably still in your system, but it is no different just because you are planning to have surgery.

I would have your partner use condoms. But talk to your doctor today or tomorrow! This is extremely important!

I totally agree. Call your dr. I went off the bcp about one month prior to scheduling surgery, and she told us to use condoms immediately!!! I have many of the same medical problems as you do, and she said I still COULD possibly conceive.

Give yourself peace of mind. Talk to your dr. and get a preg test if it would make you feel better.

I'm all for getting as "busy" as you can before surgery, but use condoms!

Also, when we are mega stressed, it's hard to have an orgasm, even if you are perfectly healthy. There's so much going on for you right now that I sure wouldn't worry about the surgery, etc..ruining your sex life. I would guess that stress is ruining your sex life. For the moment.....

Thank you both. You're right, I should be responsible about this as we never know what may happen. Although, talk about cruel irony! I don't have children and getting pregnant before surgery would be psychologically and emotionally too difficult to handle.

Fallbride, you are soon to go to the castle. Hope you are well and as prepared as ever! I'll think of you...

Janet, hope you are feeling ok. Thanks for taking time to respond, both of you.

Being the fertile Myrtle that I am, I would never have taken a chance. I got pregnant using and IUD and my first baby was 6 months old. Then I missed taking a pill one night when my second baby was 6 months old and OMG I freaked when I was late the next month. Fortunately I was only 3 days late but I was never late. Whew! Now I'll never have to worry again.

Thanks to all of you. Again, I'm not usually this stupid. However, force of habit not to have to think about birth control. Especially in this stressful time, somehow, it did not occur to me!!! (I know, I feel like a dough-head enough as it is!!!)

I spoke to both my OB-GYN & GP today and they both agreed that there is 1 in 1 milion chance of me getting pregnant due to my history. However, for my own peace of mind, they've suggested the morning after pill (or a version thereof.) Everything's coming out in less than a month anyway, but my hospital is very Catholic and will not perform the surgery if they suspect I might be pregnant.

I can't believe I have to worry about this at this time!!! I don't need this added stress and will be very careful....

Thanks to all of you!

I was going to mention that but don't want to offend anyone and their choices. I'm glad that you've talked to someone about it.

Keep us posted.

can I get pregnant 1 mth prior to surgery?

Hi,

Funny thing, at my pre op my doctor asked me too about whether I could be pregnant. I haven't used the Pill for over a year now, and hubby and I normally don't have intercourse because it is too painful for me, so we never have condoms. Well, a couple days before my pre op, we actually did it .

I told my doctor I'm 99.99999999% sure I'm not, but if for some reason I am, to not let it delay the surgery as we do not want children (never have). She agreed and put it in my file. So I guess it depends on the hospital policy and whether they go with the patient's wishes. In my case, at least, I'm okay for surgery even if for some reason I am pregnant (and I would only be ... 2 weeks ... at the most if I were ).

I agree Andrea. If I'm going to have it removed in 1 month, what does it matter? I've come to terms with not having children and even if I did get pregnant, I couldn't bring it to term, so it becomes a non-issue. However, because of the hospital's policy, not my doctor, things would get complicated. In fact, my doctor said she wouldn't write it in my file... sigh! I know I can trust my doctor to respect my wishes.

I took the morning after pill as a precaution and problem solved....
