home yesterday and in awful pain

My TAH was the 23rd and I got home yesterday. I've had 3 c-sections and an appendectomy and thought I was prepared for the pain but it has just been unbelievable! I woke up in agony and pretty much stayed that way for 3 days and even now, the pain meds are barely toning it down... Why does this hurt so bad for some and others say their pain was controlled????

The dr said I had massive scar tissue which she removed and she found a lot of endometriosis (also removed.) I had the surgery due to fibroids so was surprised to hear this. I thought a sonogram would show endo?

My abdomen is bruised from ribs down, my back feels like someone has used it for a punching bag, and even my ankles and shoulders are bruised! I am so confused!

Thanks for letting me rant-

Beth

Hi Beth,

It sounds like you had extensive work done, so it's to be expected that you'll have an increased level of pain. If your pain meds aren't working, you need to call your doctor immediately. You probably need something stronger. It's very important that your pain be under control, as you heal faster if your body isn't having to exert energy in fighting pain.

I hope you feel better soon!

Best wishes and lots of healing s,

Lisa

Welcome Home, Beth!!! I had my surgery on the 21st. I so understand your pain, though not to the degree that you have it, I don't believe. It sounds like you went through quite an ordeal. I'd definitely call the Dr immediately and ask about the bruising and for SURE, increase the pain meds. I will be talking to my Dr on Wed when the staples are removed. I expected the pain from the abdominal but what I didn't expect was the BACK pain that would result...............likely from using all my back muscles to stand up, sit down, walk, etc. I don't know which is worse now.....the tummy or the back. I was going to post a question about it in the forum but seeing that you are experiencing the same thing, I didn't feel so alone. Chin up, princess.........we'll be like new women when this passes.

Painful

I can relate to the pain. I'm always amazed at the women who have said there was no or little pain. I woke up immediately in the recovery room in major pain... went through the whole thing about 1-10 and where was the pain... well, I thought I would get pain relief and all I got finally was, "sorry but I just gave you 6 shots in the last 20 minutes and you don't need anymore". Hmmm. It was terrible and I felt as if I never got paincontrol. It was bad for several weeks at home as well. I took everything that was prescribed (oxycodone) and even had a refill for another 50. I had my gallbladder out the old way years ago, so thought I was pretty prepared. This was much worse. I'd do things differently this time.. like get an epidural for the pain for recovery.

I'm so sorry you are hurting.

I had a really hard first week at home. Demand pain meds that work. Shashi is right you can not heal if you are in pain. I tried to wean myself off pain meds and my doctor explained that I had to take pain meds.

You will feel better in the weeks to come. Try laying down more. Sitting up is considered an activity. Be very careful getting in and out of bed.

Take care and come here often for support.

Three c-sections here as well, and YES!...this surgery has been much more painful than the 3 sections. Just wanted to tell you that I feel for you! GOOD LUCK!
