Yoga

I am almost 6 weeks post op and would like to start exercising again...I am walking a little...I still get so tired. I would really like to start doing Yoga. I used to do it and really liked the relaxing results.
Does anyone know when it would be OK to start that?
Thanks

With my LSH surgery I am approved for "gym exercise" 4 weeks after surgery. Of course like everyone says on this board....GET YOUR DOCTORS APPROVAL FIRST. Everyone here has a different procedure done with different needs, recovery times, etc. It all depends on what your doctor says is OK and how you personally are progressing in the healing process.

YOGA sounds heavenly!!! Thats just the kind of thing I plan on doing afterwards. I was told that what I do afterwards would be common sense for me and done at the rate I feel is best for me. It will all depend on how I feel...good, so-so, or bad. I am so anxious to heal and get my active life back!! But I will do it at my bodys recovery pace....not by what I want to force to happen.

Take it easy......Yoga is an excellent subtle exercise. Make sure you drink alot of water and rest as well.

I was also going to buy some Resistance Bands. You can buy them in various resistances, hook them to a doorknob or doorjam and do very light stretches with minimal effort. Even holding a canned food product in each hand and stretching helps. Just as long as youre moving and slowly working on your range of motion helps to keep those achey sedentary muscle aches away.

Good luck with your healing and exercise!!! Take care!!

Yoga

I've been doing a few yoga exercises at home, maybe 15 min/day. I've been doing child's pose by itself for about a week either in bed or in the bath and it feels really good.
of course I would say that any poses where you "jump" into position should be avoided. also, work next to a chair or wall in case you fall. similar to the safeguards doing yoga during pregnancy.
I have a yoga bolster which I use to mellow out some of the harder positions.
if you're going to a yoga class, tell the instructor you've had abdominal surgery and before any pose that looks too hard, ask the instructor to give you an alternative pose or a gentler way to do the same pose.
and of course, get doctor's clearance first!
I think yoga is the best exercise! good for mind, body and spirit!

Yoga

I am 7+ weeks post-op and was given the go ahead for doing yoga and tia chi yesterday... with the usual caveats - start slow and easy, don't push it, no lifting or weights, not for more than 30 minutes for the first month (15 being best to start and work up), use a chair or table to steady yourself (falls are really bad!), no super-twisty-bendy poses for a while, and work on a soft mat. I must say it feels great to get moving again! But now I'm sore, guess I did just a bit too much.

Good luck! And enjoy - yoga is sooooo nice after such trauma

My doctor approved Iyengar style restorative poses at two weeks post-op with "full" classes approved at 4 weeks "using common sense". I am at almost 8 weeks now, avoiding most inversions and strenuous standing poses (mostly because of deconditioning) and doing fine otherwise.

Restorative is the best! It has realy helped me keep it together. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for the great advice. I will get my dr's approval and start calling around for the best class. I can tell I need to take it slowly...everything I do tires me out a lot.

You are all the best!
