post cone biopsy question

I am 10 days post cone biopsy for recurrent dysplasia. I don't remember if my doctor told me how long this bleeding continues, but the internet gives conflicting advice.

Can anyone advise how long bleeding goes on for? It has been the same since surgery, ranging from dark to bright red, moderate. Mild cramps still. I don't know if I should cancel things for awhile or mention it to the doctor - he is always SO busy! My husband thinks I am just fine even though I keep telling him I shouldn't lift things...

Hi scaredkat,
I would call your doctor. everyone heals differently but i had 2 cone biopsies done before and i only bled for a few days and then it went to spotting. i had bigger problems with swelling, i swelled so much that my insides were on my outsides. i couldnt sit down, only lay or stand until swelling reduced.
Please call your doctor and see what he says, he may want to see you.

Anytime you have a medical concern you should call your doctor. That's what they are there for!

That being said, I had light bleeding for about 2 weeks, pinkish in color then later brown. Docs usually like to know about any bright red bleeding. Go ahead and make the call. Your doc won't know you're concerned if you don't call. Even if there's nothing wrong, you'll at least get some peace of mind.

Let us know what you find out!

After my cone, I really had no bleeding for the first 5 days, then passed some stuff my doc told me to expect, then started spotting. But it was less and less each day for the next two weeks until my period (the last one for me forever!), which was a bit heavier than previous ones.

Call the doc if you are bleeding more than your doctor said you would. They won't mind you calling even if your amount is "normal". That's what they are there for.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I will call tomorrow. They don't give you any info after the procedure (gave me an info sheet on laparascopy which didn't apply at all), and I didn't even see or talk to the surgeon to know how it went.

Update

Thanks for the help.

I saw my doctor today. He's put me on anitbiotics for infection.

Mixed news from the cone biopsy path report (for recurrent CINII on a office biopsy) - no dysplasia. Does that mean its gone for now, or did he miss it in the canal? My dr. can't answer that for me.

Anyways, my doctor suggests putting off the hysterectomy decision until February when I go back for the next biopsy. Hopefully, I can always stay one step ahead.

This site has been such a blessing since September when I was told of the recurrence. Thanks again to everyone.

Was the office biopsy done of the external cervix or internal cervix? You can have abnormal cells on the exterior without having them on the interior. Those cells (on the exterior) are commonly treated with cryotherapy.

Jeanine:

I guess the cells (focal moderate dysplasia) were on the exterior surface of the cervix, but high in the canal. My gyn figures he was able to eliminate just by the office biopsy (I never had any cryotherapy) - the oncologist I saw said that was never possible and that he probably left cells somewhere. Who to believe?

Since you had a similar diagnosis (my first path read carcinoma-in-situ/severe dysplasia with involved margins in 2002), any where I can turn? Have you ever tried the asha web site (HPV chat room)? I really need someone who's had the same thing as I find this DIFFICULT to deal with (ie. sleeping pills...). I had about 10 questions for my gyn and he had so little time I didn't get them answered. He tends to dismiss any concerns I have.

I am still convinced (from info on the internet ie. ACCP, Reuters, WomensHealth), that I should be tested for HPV (to found out which strain and if I am still positive) - I'd pay for it if I could find out where to go. My gyn and oncologist won't do it.

Thank you immensely.

scaredkat,
Are there any free clinics or sexual health clinics near you.. something like the planned parenthoods we have here in the US.
Here they automatically test for HPV on your pap smear. at least most doctors do. If your doctors won't do it maybe the clinic would. you could get a full STD screen and it would include HPV. They consider it an STD. Though there are other ways to get it. i got it through a blood transfusion when i was a baby. I have the strain that causes cancers not warts. which explains why i had cervical cancer at the age of 21.
I hope this helps you. I am sorry your doctors are not willing to test for it and are giving you such a hard time. Is there any chance you can switch doctors as well. it doesnt sound like this doc is the right one for you, if he doesnt have the time to even answer your questions. I think a second opinion and another doctor would be very informative for you.
Good Luck. Let me know what you do.

P.s. i just noticed you wrote "if i am STILL positive" if you tested positive for it before than you still have it.. there is NO cure for HPV only treatments for presented symptoms depending on the strain of which there are over 70. It does not go away.
