heel and foot pain
I was wondering if anyone has suffered from heel pain prior to and after surgery. I had a TAH, kept ovaries on Sept 29/03. I had been suffering with heel pain prior to surgery and was told that this was a symptom of menopause by other women my age. The pain continues post surgery...and as I have kept my ovaries, I understand I will have a natural menopause ( am 49 yrs old) so expect the usual symptoms. Haven't had anything checked out as was consumed with planning for the hysterectomy...but curious as to whether anyone else has experience this )

I don't think this is a sign of menopause, and I would ask your doctor about the pain. It sounds like bursitis to me.

heel and foot pain
Could be either a heel spur or plantar fasciitis. A couple of years ago (I am 43) I had very bad heel pain, especially getting out of bed in the morning. At the time I wasn't exercising. Since then I started a daily exercise program of 15 minutes of stretching, 4 miles of walking, and working out on the Cybex machines at the YMCA.
Stretching really helped the heel pain out a lot. My daughter's gymnastics teacher called the stretches "ballerina feet" (toes pointed forward) and "clown feet" (toes pointed up to the ceiling). One Cybex machine called "rotary calf" where you press the plate with the balls of your feet does the same stretches with weight.
Since I began this program, I only have heel pain when I haven't been able to exercise for some reason (like now after my surgery!). Plus, I lost 25 pounds, lowered my cholesterol and triglycerides, and feel and look tons better! I didn't really diet, either. By the way, I thank my gynecologist for telling me to lose weight before my surgery.
Good luck with your heel and foot pain.

sounds familiar!
i went to the podiatrist this week. i am 3 weeks postop so i have lots of free time. it was a quick easy visit. a few xrays quickly showed very large heel spurs on each foot. they started me on antiinflamitory pill, cushioned heel cups ans ankle support for the muscle along the bottom of my foot. i am already doing better. 90 %of bonespurs do not require surgery! i wish i had gone sooner!

heel and foot pain
Thanks to all of you for your replies. I guess I should be booking an appointment with the podiatrist as well. Your advice was good Aspen....I think I have complicated my problem in that by probably resisting putting pressure on my heel, due to heel spur, have now created problems with my foot. I to used to walk for about 45 minutes each night but slowed up this summer. Subsequently ended up putting on 30 lbs. I had lost the previous year, and the inactivity of the surgery is compounding the problems!! Boy, if it's not one thing, it's another. Either way, thanks so much for u're comments and if I hear anything further of help I will certainly post. Thanks so much
