Kegel Exercises immediately after surgery?

i've been reading up on kegel exercises and was surprised to learn that i've been sort of doing them...uh...naturally for many years! however i'm concerned about anything POST surgery so i'm wondering, how soon after my surgery should i start doing them on a regular (daily) basis? do i need to wait for some healing to take place first or can i start/continue immediately following my LAVH?

My first response is : put this on your list of questions to ask the dr. - s/he will know what is best for YOU after YOUR surgery.

From my own experience, I tried starting them about 5 days after surgery, but didn't have much control on some of the muscles! that's for sure!!!

I started doing the kegal exercises the day I came home from surgery. I had asked the doctor before I went in for surgery when and if possible I could start doing them (I had a LAVH) and he said as soon as I felt up to it. If nothing else, it's sure to improve the muscle tone that was slack by delivering the uterus thru vagina...ouch!

That exact question is #6 on my list of 19 (I'll add more for sure) for my pre-op appt. I am also interested in hearing what the consensus on this subject is!

Hi there,

I started doing Kegels and tightening my abdominal muscles almost immediately after surgery. It hurt a bit, but I figured I needed those muscles back into shape! I was amazed how my muscles responded even after a TAH. To be on the safe side, you may want to check with your Dr. though!
