low hormones or thyroid

I need to talk to someone who is taking progesterone cream and still has 1 or both ovaries.i went today to get some progesterone cream and the lady at the herb place said it sounded like i was having low thyroid symptoms instead. i have mood swings, hair falling out,not sleeping good,a very fine tremor, vaginal burning, dry yet oily skin, heart palpitations, fast heart rate, low body temperature, intolerance to cold and hot(i am never comfortable), memory loss, confusion, brain fog,the list goes on and on. I have had my thyroid checked 4 times but not with fasting first and she said it is better to fast first. All of my levels, thyroid, hormone etc come out normal.I had been on a climara patch .025 and i came off because i have fibrosystic breasts and they were so sore and i started having what looked like milk.( i still have a little of that).and it did help with my insomnia and hot itchy feet but it didn't help with my hair or moods. Someone here told me to try progesterone cream and now the herbalist or whatever she is said to try sea kelp first and then if i didn't see a difference to try the cream.anyone have something similar? i should also say that there is a strong family history of thyroid disease. thanks-janette

low hormones or thyroid

Go to an endocronlogist and have a work up done. It sounds to me like you may have a couple of things at work. I have hypothyroid and many of the same symptoms. On the thyroid test did they do a t3 or a t4 or just a tsh? When I first went, my thyroid was in the "normal" range, just barely, but another test showed that I was with in six months of a melt down. Also, your prolactin levels may be out of wack. Either way, I would check it.
Take care. Hope you feel better.

low hormones or thyroid

Hi janette

I am hypothyroid and also on progesterone implant plus estrogen patch. I have both ovaries and uterus.

Some of your symptoms are hypo, but also indicative of other hormonal imbalance. I think I read that milk secretion can also be sign of hypo! But some of your sumptoms are also hyper - this suggests hashimotos (autoimmune disease - antibodies to thyroid) because you get these type of swings. Dont panic - this is what most Hypo people have.

You may be on the cusp of becoming Hypo - ask your Dr to test for antibodies - these are high before your thryoid gives up - usually around 6 months later. If you have antibodies, the DR may treat you immediately even though your TSH and free T4 are normal. If you have antibodies and If he doesnt treat you immediately, make sure you return for another TSH and freeT4 in the next three months.

Fasting is irrelevant! Antibodies are not related to recent meals.
If DR puts you onto thyroid treatment, you dont take your meds the day of the followup blood tests. The throid issue is probably related somewhat to overall diet (eg iodine intake) but a meal the day of the test wont influence the test results.

There are many chat rooms for thyroid problems and the most common issue is that most Drs don't know ANYTHING about thyroid problems. You have to educate yourself to get correct treatment. Information is power, insist on getting copies of your lab reports and go from there,

Good luck!

check carefully before taking kelp

Just adding my bit! My mum had hyperthyroidism that wasn't picked up for ages due to meno at young age ( 40). Her meno wasn't believed either!

Once under the specialist, she was told taking kelp is not a good idea due to the iodine in it. Most table salt has iodine added and has done for a long time for hypo prevention, but something in kelp can play havoc with the thyroid gland. I would get it checked first by your doc or an endocrinologist.

I often check posts that mention thyroid function. I went hyper after meningitis but it settled down, over past 5 years I have been borderline hypo so am tested regularly for that. My husband's family history has all females on his side with under active thyroids, mum, sister, aunts, cousins, so I have made sure my daughter understands this and if she shows any symptoms either way, to go for a blood test.

Strangely, my mother and her immediate next door neighbour both went hyper at the same time, my mum even wondered if it had been triggered by the Chenobyl radiation that did head over parts of the UK. Luckily my mum's responded well to radiation treatment and her worse side effect was glaucoma pressure in her left eye but that was made worse as she is paralysed down that side of face from mastoid op. when she was 7. Her neighbour had surgery and she ended up under active and piled back all the weight she had dramatically lost.

Hope you get some relief and answers soon, Linda

I am hypothyroid too and I agree with what the other ladies say--get your T3 and T4 levels checked, and ask to see an endocrinologist. Doctors do not know a lot about thyroid problems. I, too, have many relatives with thyroid disease.

Monalees
TAH/BSO for endometrial & cervical cancer Dec/02; synthroid for hypothryoidism and effexor for hot flashes & depression

Hi again
Make sure you have had an ANTIBODIES test - this is a sign of FUTURE problems if your other levels are OK (at the moment)
